Alfred was born to the parents of Clarence and Thelma Beck on May 3, 1938 in Detroit, Michigan. Alfred was the oldest of four children Josephine Beck, (who preceded him in death) Linell Beck and Donna Colley-Andrews. Alfred was truly a "Big Brother" caring and contributing to their well being. In his 20's he bought a home in Northwest Detroit for his mom, sisters, and brother. Alfred attended Catholic grade and high school, graduating from Catholic Central High School. Alfred went on to study at the University of Iowa where he played football. Alfred left the University of Iowa to care for his sick mother and younger siblings. He continued his studies in Liberal Arts at Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan. Alfred was well studied in many subjects: religion, world history, medical and U.S. law. He was a designer of cars, an artist, and a wood sculptor. Although his greatest love was the game of tennis. He loved to play the game, teach, and coach tennis throughout Northwest Detroit. He was well known in tennis circles especially in Palmer Park. After Alfred's knees would no longer allow him to play he still loved to watch the game and provide pointers to young and beginning players.
Alfred was a traveler; he traveled to watch tennis tournaments across the U.S. He also traveled to Africa, a trip that was most memorable for him. Alfred worked as a young man for the Wayne County Register of Deeds. He later left to pursue a career with General Motors in NewYork. After reductions and layoffs in New York, GM; Alfred moved back to Detroit and worked at Cadillac Motors for many years. Later relocating and retiring from GM Poletown Plant. Alfred never married or had any children of his own. However, he loved his many nieces and nephews; teaching to draw, teaching them history, and taking them places. His favorite place to take them was the Thanksgiving Parade. Alfred Beck was a long time and faithful member of the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament. He was also a fellow brother of the Fraternal Order of Knights of Columbus which worked to serve the church and community. Later in life Alfred's health changed and he became a resident of American House (Taylor) for over 13 years; He made many friends there and was well liked and loved. Alfred leaves to mourn his brother Linell Beck (Yvonne) and his sister Donna Colley-Andrews (Albert). His sister Josephine Beck; parents, Clarence, Thelma Beck; and (nephew) Earl Beck which all preceded him in death. He leaves a host of nieces and nephews and family. Too many to name but he loved all the same in his heart.
