Obituary

Allen E. Mays (Gene), 69, of Olive Hill, KY, a veteran and retired Detroit firefighter, died Thursday, December 6, 2018 unexpectedly at his home.

Allen (Gene) was born in New Castle, Indiana, to Dorothy Gorman and the late Clarence Mays.

He served in the United States Army from 1968-1971 and Michigan National Guard from 1986-1993, when he was honorably discharged.

Gene served the City of Detroit from 1971 to 2009. He began as an EMT/Paramedic through 1986, then advancing in the fire department where he retired as fire marshal.

Gene truly lived life to the fullest. He loved spending time with his family, friends and the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, to the point that Camo was his favorite color.

Gene spent time with the elderly monthly while delivering food to them. He had a heart to help others and would give the shirt off his back for someone in need.

He will truly be missed.

Beloved husband of the late Darlene Mays. Loving father of Calista (Tom) Nester, Allen G. (Jennifer) Mays, and Angela (Matt) Grimes. Proud grandfather of Ashley, Justin, Zachary, Joshua, and Jayden. Devoted great grandfather of Kenny. Cherished brother of Dale, Verna, John, Dan, Calvin, and Penny. Also survived by many nieces and nephews as well as other family members.

A memorial service will take place at 1:00PM (Gathering 11:00AM until the time of service) on Saturday, December 15 th , at the Taylor Chapel of Howe-Peterson Funeral Home, 9800 S. Telegraph Rd. On Friday, December 14 th , memorial gathering will begin at 3:00PM until 9:00PM.
