Andrew "Andy" Konkoly, Jr.
November 26, 1945 - September 27, 2021
Son of Andrew and Julia Konkoly, Andy passed away after a brief illness at age 75. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Joyce. He has one sister, Rosemary Broses. He was a loving and proud father to "his girls," Lynette Gascoigne, Cathryn Broses, Meredith (Jim) Morgan, and Marlene Konkoly. He was the proud grandfather of Jon (Jennifer) Morgan, Deeana Morgan, Helena (Joshua) Kremhelmer, David (Sylvia) Morgan, Jordan (Katlyn) Morgan, Phillip (Sarah) Morgan, Jim Morgan III (J.T.), and David (Amber) Davis and 17 great-grandchildren. He shared a special bond with his uncle, Al Fazekas, and John Lake, his best friend since kindergarten.
Andy grew up in Dearborn, Michigan, and attended Maples School and Fordson High School as a member of the 1964 graduating class. He received an Associate of Arts in Commerce from Henry Ford College and a Bachelor of Science in Management from Detroit College of Business. Andy was a prolific businessman, thanks to his years of experience as a bank manager, sales professional, and pizza restaurant owner. He also owned Anjo Racing, a successful thoroughbred horse-racing stable, where he both raced and trained the horses.
His love of horse-racing took him around the country. He raced his horses in Michigan at Ladbroke DRC and Great Lakes Downs; in Ohio at Thistledown Racetrack; in West Virginia at Mountaineer Racetrack; in Texas at Sam Houston Race Park, Retama Park and Lone Star Park; and the site of his greatest win, The Happy Ticket Stakes at Louisiana Downs, in Louisiana. He was honored several times as the top trainer of the year during his 30 year career. He trained the winningest horse in all of North America, Governor's Ego, in 2000. He retired in 2015.
Andy loved baseball, and played throughout his youth and into college at Henry Ford College. He was a die-hard Detroit Tigers and Michigan Wolverines fan. He took particular joy in watching his grandsons play sports. Andy also loved to golf, bowl, play card games, and listen to music, and passed all these passions down to his daughters.
