From loving son, Stephen:

A Loving Mother to 5 Children.
Sweet, Warm, Generous to all she came in contact with.
I Love You And Will Miss you Dearly Mom

From loving daughter, Ruth Ann:

The last couple of years, mom was always smiling, genuinely happy and appreciative of life. I am grateful for being able to spend this time with her.  She met her only great-granddaughter in September.

Mom and Dad's devotion to each other and their children and grandchildren was a shining example of family life.

From loving son, Bob:

Mom was adventurous early in life.

As a girl she skated on the frozen ponds, warming herself with hot chocolate or cider. She played field hockey in high school. As a young woman she skied (with wooden skis) using tow ropes to pull her up the slopes. She and her sister Ruthie were great beauties, known admiringly as 'those Herring girls'.

After the War, she (along with Ruthie and some of her friends) moved to Washington DC where they worked for the federal government, Mom working for the Navy Department.

After returning to Boston, she met Dad at a USO Dance set up for the soldiers.

Mom took up painting in the late 60's and early 70's. There are several nice works at their house in Dearborn.

Mom never had her driver's license. She did get her permit. Even after that expired, she would occasionally take the car out for a spin by herself.

Mom loved traveling to exotic locations with Dad...some on their own, others on trips Dad won through Allstate/Sears .

Mom was a peacemaker. Whenever a conflict erupted amongst us kids (or one of us with Dad), she would always try to get us to resolve it. Even in the past year or so if Dad did something that upset me, she would tell me not to get mad at my father.

Mom was a kind hearted woman, devoted to all of us kids.

She is enormously attached to Dad as well. A few years back was perhaps the coldest winter I remember with daytime highs reaching only 5 or 10 below zero. Their heater broke. It was difficult to get a repairperson out to the house to look at it. It ended up needing replacement. There was a shortage right then, so it took a couple more days for the new heater to arrive for installation. The pipes were in danger of freezing, so my Dad let all the faucets in the house drip slowly to reduce the risk. Of course we insisted on bringing them out to our house. Dad refused, saying he had to protect the house. We brought out all the space heaters we could find. We figured Mom would at least come home with us. She wouldn't leave Dad's side.

From loving daughter, Sally:

Mom was as humble as she was brilliant!  A sweetheart at home and out in the world. An avid reader of intrigue and espionage, excellent listener, trustworthy of our deepest confidences, lover of laughter, color (including a solid sequin phase) and political debate, jitterbug dancer, pinochle player and artist, she was intellectually stimulating in conversation, quietly inquisitive, and full of humility.  And, as my dad would say, "Mom's great in an emergency" - level headed under stress. As a homemaker, she made the best chicken and dumpling soup, spaghetti and meatballs, and her baking...incredible! Her warmth, prayers, and utter devotion to her husband and kids in times of happiness and challenge will shine on in the heavens as bright as the night stars in untouched lands.
