Obituary

Anthony E. Woods, beloved father of Anthony E. Woods, Jr. and husband of Mary Joan Woods, was born in Detroit in 1920. He and his twin Katherine, who survives him, were the third and fourth children of Fuller and Mary Woods. His older brother Sam and older sister Grace have predeceased Tony, and a younger sister Peg survives. Following his graduation from Pershing High School in 1938, Tony worked in several offices in Detroit before joining the army in 1943. Tony served in the CBI theatre during the Second World War, where he met Henry Missel, who was his lifelong and closest friend. Tony and Henry attended Western Michigan University after their discharge from service in 1946. In addition to earning a BA and teaching certificate at Western Michigan, Tony also met his lifelong and very close friend, Robert Lawrence, there. Tony began his teaching career in Mt Clemens, Michigan, where he lived with the Copony family with whom he remained very close for his entire life. He also completed his MA at the University of Michigan while in Mt Clemens. Most importantly, though, the Mt Clemens years were when Tony met and married his beloved wife Mary Joan, who was an English teacher with Tony at Mt Clemens High School. Tony and Mary Joan remained devoted and loving spouses as well as exceptional parents for more than fifty years. Not long after their marriage, Tony and Mary Joan moved to Dearborn, Michigan where they were both teachers and where they were soon joined by Henry Missel and his wife Nanette. Tony and Mary Joan's son, Anthony Jr., was also born shortly after their move to Dearborn. Tony began his Dearborn years teaching English at Edison Junior High School where he met his lifelong and very close friend John Eloff. Many of Tony's students from Edison have remained in touch with him over the years, and he has taken great pride in their accomplishments. Tony moved to Bryant Junior High School in 1967, and he remained a counselor there until his retirement in 1985. Tony and Mary Joan were devoted travelers, visiting well over 40 countries and enjoying many trips with close friends including Jim and Anne Harnden and Bud and Jo Rounds. They were also dedicated volunteers, especially in their retirement, and Tony was a member of Senior Alliance until his death. He and Mary Joan were also honored for their volunteer activities by Dearborn Mayor Mike Guido in 1999. Following Mary Joan's death in 2005, Tony moved into Henry Ford retirement center, where he has spent the last seven years making more close friends, most especially his friends at his dinner table, and enjoying many activities in his very rich life. In addition to his two sisters, Tony is survived by his son Tony and daughter-in-law Kay. Visitation Thursday 2-8 pm at the Dearborn Chapel of the Howe-Peterson Funeral Home, 22546 Michigan Ave. A Memorial will be held at the Edison Room at Henry Ford Village on Friday, November 22 from 1:00-3:00. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Henry Ford Community College or Oakwood Hospital.
