Dennis Loren Kranich, age 79, passed away on May 18, 2026. Dennis was born on June 15, 1946, the son of Loren and Dorothy (Nealy) Kranich. He is survived by his son Benjamin, daughter in law Cyndie, and brother Jim. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents and his late brother, David.
Dennis led a life in pursuit of creative joy. After graduating from Edsel Ford High School in 1964, he attended art school at Wayne State University while also playing music. These artistic pursuits were temporarily interrupted by being drafted into the US Army. After training, Dennis was deployed to Turkey in signal intelligence with the army security agency. The army then sent him, in 1967, to a place many a young man with a passion for music and art would desire to go: San Francisco.
During this time his son, Benjamin, was born. After discharging from the Army, Dennis worked for the USPS and returned to his artistic pursuits. Eventually relocating home to Detroit, he continued to make music and began a career as a graphic designer and illustrator. Dennis would go on to become the art director for Goldmine and Creem magazine, while also designing concert posters, album covers, and many projects for local Detroit bands from the 70's onward. For his accomplishments in this, Dennis was an inductee to the Michigan Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.
Throughout his life Dennis dedicated himself to empathy and compassion. He became well regarded as a “walking rock and roll encyclopedia” and would regale anyone and everyone with his knowledge of rock, blues, and jazz music history. He never stopped working, and he never stopped being an open book, with an open heart.
Dennis will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
