Obituary

Donald Fred Andrus was born in Koppel, PA on July 21, 1925 to Emma DeAndrea and Nicholas Andrus.  He was the fourth of six children.  The family moved to Elwood City, PA and that is where he spent most of his childhood.  The family struggled through the Depression.  While both parents worked, the kids were expected to work around the house which included taking care of some farm animals. After high school, Don worked odd jobs.  He eventually headed to California and stayed with family there for a while.  He worked on a cousins fishing boat in Santa Cruz and he attended Northwest Schools, a junior college, and received a diploma in Airline Career training. He moved to Michigan and worked at Ford Motor Company for a while.  He met Ilza Beltrao through his Aunt Julia who set them up.  Three months later they married and settled in Dearborn, MI.  They had two children, Yannie and Nicholas. Donald then began a long career with Mannon Express, a shipping company.  He was a key punch operator and handled all of the company's payroll and manifests.  When Mannon Express bought their first computer system, Donald broke open the manuals and taught himself how to program the system. Donald worked with Mannon Express until the mid eighties when the company went out of business during the recession.  He then headed west again and settled in California near his parents.  There he met his second wife, Joan.  They were married in 1985.  They moved to Little Rock, Arkansas where Donald started his next career, hotel management!  Donald and Joan enjoyed a wonderful marriage for twenty years when Joan passed away from cancer.  They were truly soul mates. Donald then moved back to Dearborn to be near his children and grand children. Donald is survived by his children, Yannie Andrus and Nicholas & Roseann Andrus, and his grandchildren, Alexi Koeing, Mary Kathryn White, Ethan Andrus and Emma Andrus. Private family services will be conducted. Please leave an online condolence to comfort the family.
