Doris
Matthews
September 29, 1931 – October 31, 2023
It is with great sadness we announce the death of our beloved mother, Doris J. Matthews [née Duermit]. She died peacefully on Tuesday, Oct 31, 2023 surrounded by her loving sons. She was 92, and succumbed to complications from a brief bout of pneumonia.
Doris met John, the love of her life [predeceased her May 2023], in kindergarten. She missed him terribly and looked forward to being with him again. They married in 1954 and spent 68.5 wonderful years together. She was a loving mother to John [Paula] Matthews, Steven [Diane] Matthews, and Philip Matthews. She was an adoring grandmother to Allison Matthews, Jessica [Chris] Newton, Sarah Matthews, Rachel [Stephen] Mis, and the late Abigail Matthews. She was also a proud great grandmother to Liam and Carter Newton. She was the youngest Duermit sibling, and sister of Eileen Crawford [George], Marvin [Dorothy], and Donald [Marie], who predeceased her. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and friends she loved dearly. She was a wonderful mother who was always there when needed.
As all the memories flood in, she will mostly be remembered for her love, kindness, smile, generosity, faithfulness, smarts, wit, loved to debate even when in agreement, easy laugh [many times at her own jokes, with snorts included], sparkling blue eyes, and love for her Lord and family. She graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in Education. She taught math for many years, lastly at Fordson HS. She was a Deacon in the Presbyterian church, volunteered with AAUW, member of Alpha Chi Omega, serious bridge player, loved to travel, voracious reader, nightly Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune fan, and cheered mightily for the Cincinnati Bearcats and Detroit Tigers. We feel blessed she was such a huge part of our lives.
We appreciate your kind words of condolence and remembrance, warm wishes of peace, and continuing love as we remember a life very well lived.
Memorial service will be held Friday November 24th at 2:00pm at the Henry Hotel Dearborn, 300 Town Center Dr. Dearborn Michigan, 48126, 313-441-2000, formerly known as the Ritz.
