Obituary

Doris was born to Minnie Libey Cuthbert and her husband, Ivan N. Cuthbert on September 18th, 1921 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. They moved into their new home on Platt Road in Ann Arbor in 1922. She showed an early interest in organizations by joining a sewing group, then she was 10 years old. It was called the Platt Happy Hour 4-H club. Her father, Ivan, an engineer, was a long-time president of the Village of Platt, and organized and took an active role in the interdenominational church there, along with his entire family. Doris' mother was a registered nurse and both parents graduated from the University of Michigan. Her parents took an interest in planting and cultivating fruits and vegetables. Her father's hobby was raising chickens and showing them at the state and county fairs. Doris attended the Platt Community School for the first 6 years of her schooling and then went through Jones Junior High School and Ann Arbor High School in Ann Arbor, graduating in 1938. In 1942 she graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree from the Literature, Science and Arts program and the School of Education. She added a master's degree in Speech Pathology in 1944. She started teaching speech and language pathology in the Dearborn Public Schools in 1943 and continued until 1977. During her teaching years she was on the Board of Directors of the Dearborn Schools Credit Union for 20 years. She also served as president of the Dearborn Education Association and the local chapter of the Exceptional Children's Association. She was an early member of Alpha Delta Kappa, honorary sorority for teachers, and was active in the Cherry Hill Baptist Church. In her later teaching years she was a member of the 25+ club of the Dearborn schools and served on its Board of Directors and also as president. She was married to Richard A. Metzler for over 50 years from July of 1946. She was preceded in death, in 2000 by her husband, a Ford Motor Company retiree, and by a sister, Ellen Webb, of Joliet, Illinois. Ellen was a retired pre-school teacher and a published author of children's books. Doris is survived by one brother, William R. Cuthbert, retired Baptist pastor from Potsdam, New York. A second brother preceded her in death, the late Ivan N. Cuthbert, local architect. She is also survived by several cousins, nieces, and nephews. Her little parakeet, Punkin, shared her home with her since 1999. He was great company. Doris always enjoyed taking part in the sports activities led by her husband--boating, fishing, RVing, hunting, golfing, camping, bowling, and skin diving. She would can or freeze fruits and vegetables and preserve and cook venison and other fruits of the hunts. Doris would like any memorial money to go to the memorial fund at Cherry Hill Baptist Church or to the scholarship fund of the Theta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa. Burial will be at Forest Hills cemetery in Ann Arbor.
