Obituary

Dorothy was born in Detroit, Michigan and raised by devout Catholic parents, George and Frances Giska, in a Polish neighborhood on the west side of town.  She was the youngest of five children, a sibling to Florence (Ben), Leonard (Irene), Frank (Clare) and Edward (Lorraine).  She attended grade school at St. Andrew's and completed high school at Chadsey.  She then worked a few years for the Visiting Nurses Association as a secretary.  Dorothy had many close and dear friends.  She met the love of her life, Leonard Turowski, in her early twenties at a bowling alley.  They married shortly after his return from service in the army during World War II.  They bought a house on Detroit Street in Dearborn and were founding members of St. Martha Catholic Church.  They raised four boys who they called Larry, Phil, Danny and Anthony.  Leonard and Dorothy shared a loving marriage and remained faithful to the Catholic religion.  Dorothy stayed home, raising the boys, while Leonard worked as a tool and die maker at General Motors.  They enjoyed the holidays, spending time with Leonard's siblings, Loretta (Stanley) Rempala, Albina (Martin) Wegrzyn and their families. She loved to cook and bake, well known for her flaky pie crusts and fluffy cheesecake. Leonard, Dorothy and the kids would go on annual summer vacations.  They were Detroit Tigers fans.  Following Leonard's passing in 1987, Dorothy became more active at St. Martha, where she was a member of the altar society and went on church sponsored bus tours.  She had fun going to the movies and out to dinner with her girlfriends Kitty Mochet, Mary Kelly and Betty Wendlowsky.  She met her friend, Roy Crowley, at St. Martha and became close with him and his family.  In the year 2000, Dorothy decided it was time to sell the house and moved to a condominium apartment at Morley Manor, where she met more friends.  She was a very active and social woman, also enjoying time with her grandchildren, Christopher (Stephanie) and Emily, and later in life, great grandson Camden.  In May of 2019, Dorothy needed extra care and moved to the Woodhaven Retirement Community in Livonia, where she rented an apartment in assisted living and was well cared for and loved by many. She showed her strength during the COVID lockdowns.  Dorothy will be missed and remembered by her sweet smile and good spirits.  In the end, her heart could beat no more, as she joined her pre-deceased loved ones, especially the late Leonard, Larry, Phil, and Anthony in the House of the Lord. The family requests donations be made to the American Heart Association.
