Edmund Martin Barbour MD
Edmund Martin Barbour (Marty), from Dearborn MI age 85, passed away on September 28th, 2025 peacefully surrounded by his family.
Born on March 4th, 1940, in Detroit, Michigan to Elizabeth Thomas Barbour and Edmund Nicholas Barbour, Marty graduated from Austin Catholic Preparatory School in Detroit in 1958. Marty went on to study at Marquette University in Milwaukee WI receiving a BA in 1962 and a MD in 1966 where he also met the love of his life, Judy Binell whom he married on July 31, 1965. The newlyweds moved to Boston, MA in 1966 as Marty began an Internship at the US Public Health Service Hospital. Following his internship, Marty served as a Lieutenant Commander in the US public Health service and Coast Guard assigned to the Public Health Service Division of Indian Health at Indian Hospital in Phoenix, AZ. Following his honorable discharge for time served, Marty, Judy, and baby Nicole moved back to Dearborn for an Internal Medicine Residency at Harper Hospital. Shortly thereafter Michael became a welcome addition to the family. Marty became the Chief Resident and a Fellow at Wayne State University/Harper Hospital for Gastroenterology. This was only the beginning of a lifelong medical career serving at both Oakwood and Harper hospitals and the Detroit Medical Center.
Marty started a private practice in Dearborn, MI in 1971. In 1976 he became an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at Wayne State University and from 1987 on was an Associate Professor of Medicine, Wayne State University. Marty was Section Chief of Gastroenterology at Oakwood Hospital from 1976-95 and 2000- 2005. Chief of Medicine at Oakwood Hospital from 1988-94, and Vice Chief of Staff from 1992 -1995. Marty retired from the practice of medicine in 2006.
Marty was an active, passionate and outspoken participant on many boards and committees and served as President of the Michigan Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, President of the Detroit Medical Club, and President of the Wayne County Medical Society. He loved his tenure as Santa Claus at the yearly Wayne County Medical Society Children's Christmas Party for many years. In his community he served on the Sacred Heart Parish Council, the Divine Child Men's Club, the Phoenix Club, and was President at Essex Golf and Country Club in Windsor, ON. In 2019 Marty established "The Edmund M. Barbour MD, Endowed Research Fellowship in Gastroenterology Fund" at the Medical College of Wisconsin (formerly Marquette University School of Medicine) to support and ensure ongoing research in the field.
Marty was an avid sportsman - hunting and fishing at Durkee Lakes Hunting and Fishing Club and "the Binell cottage" in northern MI. He also enjoyed baseball, softball, bowling, and especially golf- his favorite pastime and what literally kept him moving… To say he was competitive is an understatement…. He always said, "you work hard to play hard" and he lived up to it earning the love and friendship of many and the nickname "Instant Party Uncle Marty" from nieces Kristin and Mary Beth Barbour which quickly caught on throughout the entire family.
Loving husband of Judy for 60 years. Dear father of Nicole (Paul Silveri), and Michael (Kathleen). Grandfather of Brittany and Alexander Barbour. Survived by brother David Barbour (Suzanne), sister-in-law Carolyn Witte (the late Ron), brother-in-law Robert Binell (Martha), many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Great Doctor, great husband and father, great friend!
