Eleanor Christoff Bodurow passed away peacefully in her home on January 11, 2026 at the age of 99. She was born in Youngstown, OH and raised in Akron, OH. She grew up in a loving home with her parents (Kosta and Paraskeva), brother (Paul) and her aunt (Evanka). She was born into a proud immigrant family of Macedonian lineage and christened in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Her family survived the Great Depression and World War II. Her brother and she were raised with strong principles of service to country and community. Her brother enlisted in the Air Force after he graduated Valedictorian at Garfield High School in Akron, OH. He served in Korea and in the Air Force Judge Advocate General's Corps.
After graduating Valedictorian at Garfield High School, Eleanor attended the University of Akron, majored in Psychology and graduated Valedictorian of her undergraduate class in 1948. Upon graduation, she received an award from John S. Knight Endowment and the Edith Stedman Scholarship from Radcliffe College to cover the cost of her tuition. These awards enabled her to attend the Radcliffe Graduate Management Training Program in cooperation with Harvard Business School (HBS). Eleanor received her Master's in Public Business Administration on June 22, 1949. The women in her class forged the path for women to later be admitted to HBS. She was the youngest graduating member of the 1949 class at age 22 and was the last surviving member of that class prior to passing.
Eleanor was employed as a retail buyer by Allied Stores for nearly one decade in Baltimore, MD, Detroit, MI and New York City, NY. In NYC she worked at the Flagship Macy's store on West 34th Street. She also was employed as a retail buyer by Himelhoch's in Detroit, MI.
Eleanor met the love of her life, George R. Bodurow, in Detroit, MI and married him on August 29, 1954. She was proud that her husband served in the Air Force Reserves for military intelligence after he emigrated to the United States from Europe in 1950. Her husband and she raised four daughters (Christina, Constance, Charlotte and Catherine) in Dearborn, MI while her husband worked his way 'up the ladder' at Ford Motor Company. Eleanor was a principled, engaged and loving mother who gave her daughters every opportunity to develop themselves in every aspect of their lives. Her husband and she expected their daughters to excel in their school studies. She believed in a well-rounded childhood experience and offered her children extracurricular opportunities in church, education, music and the cultural arts, ballet, sports and service activities. She was very involved with volunteering on Dearborn's Board of Education, Dearborn Community Arts Council (DCAC), Dearborn Symphony, with Oakwood Hospital and the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO). She was one of the founders of DCAC and received the DCAC Mayor's Arts Volunteer Award in 1994.
Eleanor relocated to Sarasota, FL in 1997 after her husband George passed away in 1995. She enjoyed many years of symphony, opera, ballet, art, other cultural activities and hosting her family and friends in her new hometown. She attended St. Michael The Archangel Catholic Church on Siesta Key in Sarasota. Eleanor also enjoyed traveling in the US and Europe after relocating to Sarasota.
Eleanor is survived by her four daughters [Christina Bodurow, Constance Bodurow, Charlotte Bodurow (Peter Brown) and Catherine Bodurow], her grandson George Erwin (Christina's son), her sister-in-law Cora Christoff and her children (Gina Caponi, Mark Christoff and John Christoff), her cousin Vera Bograkos and her children (Tim Bograkos and Stephan Bograkos), many other cousins, nieces and nephews. She is also survived by members of her husband's family in Europe, Rumiana Bodurova and family, as well as Rumiana Georgiev-Dontchev and her children (Alexandra Georgiev-Jamil and Donovan Georgiev) in the US. Eleanor surrounded herself with high quality people whose friendships lasted for decades and some lasted most of her life. Eleanor was also loved and respected by many who called her their "adopted mom." She will be dearly missed by all.
Eleanor and her family were very grateful to the doctors, nurses and caregivers who assisted her devoted daughter Catherine with her care in the final years of her life. Eleanor lived a long and comfortable life in her home due to the efforts of these individuals.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 13th at 4:00 P.M. with a Gathering of Family and Friends from 2:00 P.M. to 3:45 P.M. at Howe-Peterson Funeral Home and Cremation Services located at 22546 Michigan Avenue, Dearborn, Michigan 48124.
The family is asking that flowers not be sent at this time, as options for donations in memory of Eleanor will be provided prior to the service.
