Obituary

Elizabeth Bloch, 85, passed away peacefully at home with family on November 21, 2008. She was born to John O'Malley and Mary MacDonald in 1923 and spent the Great Depression on a farm outside Pittsburgh, PA. During World War II, she worked for Revere Copper and Brass in Detroit analyzing metals used for ammunition shells. In 1951 she settled in Dearborn with her husband, Henry Bloch. She never stood still. She baked great pies and fantastic oatmeal cookies, but her creativity went far beyond the kitchen. She wove baskets of all shapes and sizes, dyeing the reed by hand. She also hooked many of the beautiful rugs throughout her home, some of which took years to complete. She gathered flowers and other materials to make natural wool dyes for every color by hand. Refinishing furniture was a hobby of hers and she decorated many pieces with detailed stencils and elaborate patterns. She frequented the Detroit Institute of Art, taking classes and enjoying their extensive collection. After her husband's death in 1997, she joined the Dearborn Travel Club to explore and visit her far flung family along the way. She will be missed by many and we will always treasure the pieces she created and left behind. Elizabeth Bloch is survived by her daughter, Brenda Bloch-Young; grandchildren, Aaron and Erica Young; and brothers, Tommy and Jack O'Malley. Donations in her honor can be made to Angela Hospice, 14100 Newburgh Road, Livonia, Michigan 48154, 866 464-7810. Arrangements by the Dearborn Chapel of the Howe-Peterson Funeral Home 313 561-1500.
