Lieutenant Commander Erwin John Spencer U.S. Navy Retired, passed away October 4, 2013. Born October 23, 1923 Dearborn, Mi. Attended Henry Ford Greenfield Village Schools and Edison Institute of Technology 1929-42. Enlisted 1942 Naval Aviation Cadet, V-5 program, graduating 1944 Pensacola, Fl. with commission and wings, assigned Naval Air Transport Service. Accompanied Admiral Richard E. Byrd Antarctic Expedition 1947. Served Patrol Squadron 10 in 1951-52 Newfoundland, Iceland, North Africa, and Mediterranean areas. Joined British 120 RAF Squadron as an Exchange Officer 1953-54. Seaplane tender USS Pine Island supporting Taiwan Patrol Force 1957-54. Airborne Early Warning Squadron One Southwest Pacific 1959-60. Naval Air Test Center 1961-64. Retired 1964. Member of organizations: Retired Officers Association, Naval Aviation Museum Foundation, Naval Air Transport Service, Inc., Dearborn Historical Society, Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village, Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, Dearborn. Preceded in death by his parents, Clarence M. and Ruby A. Spencer, sister Jean Bryan and brother Weston C. Spencer. Survived by his sister, Florence Mae Funkhouser, Fernandina Beach, Fl, and seven neices and nephews with many grand nieces and nephews. Services will be held Friday, October 11, visitation 10:00-12:00 with a celebration of life at 12:00 at Howe-Peterson Funeral Home 22546 Michigan Ave. Dearborn, MI.
