Esther Rose Giss was born in Conklin, Michigan in 1917. She was the 6th of 9 children born to John and Lesettie Hassold. Although Esther was a curious and outgoing child, her siblings say that they had to tie a rope around her waist so they could force her to go to school with them. Esther moved to Detroit as a young woman, where she met and married John Giss. They remained in the Detroit area and their marriage endured for 69 years. Esther worked in the automotive industry and was an early labor union member and staunch supporter. She was a long time member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church and believed in the goodness of mankind, the strength of family, and the promise of the Michigan lottery, Publisher's Sweepstakes, and time well spent at the casino. Her loving heart, zest for life, and faithful spirit will be sorely missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her husband, John Giss. Sister-in-law of Donna Hassold and Verna Giss and her many nieces and nephews. Funeral 11 am Friday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Dearborn. Visitation 10-11 am at the church.
