Eugene Richard Guidi
1942 – 2022
Eugene "Gene" Guidi passed away on Sept 3, 2022 in Detroit, MI. The son of Violet and Gino Guidi, and the brother of Theresa (Guidi) Bileti, he is survived by nephew Jay Bileti, niece Anne (Bileti) Johns and niece Lisa (Bileti) Costa.
Gene Guidi was born on 11/28/42 and grew up in Allen Park, MI. He attended Central Michigan University where he developed a voracious love of reading and writing. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in English and shared his knowledge when becoming an English teacher at St. Francis Cabrini grade school. After a few years of teaching, he began a 36-year career as a writer for the Detroit Free Press. He began his journalistic career as the editor of Action Line, a reader assistance service, and then moved to his permanent home in the sports department. He took over the horse racing coverage, serving as editor, and published regular race handicaps. In 1984 he became a beat writer for the Detroit Tigers, while continuing to cover Triple Crown races, until his retirement in 2005. Gene received multiple awards in recognition of his outstanding sports coverage.
Gene was a very generous man as evidenced by his close relationships and his regular donations to various charities. He spent his retirement doing what he loved – reading, watching sports, and handicapping horses. Gene possessed a wonderful sense of humor and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
