Frank Anthony
Mellnick Jr.
June 25, 1938 – November 15, 2021
Frank Anthony Mellnick, Jr. was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1938 to his parents' Frank Sr. and Helen. When Frank was 7 years old, he fell ill with polio and spent 9 months in an iron lung at Herman Kiefer Hospital. As a result, Frank lost the function of one lung and paralysis of the right arm.
Although the outlook was poor, Frank pushed on and by God's grace, he was given a second chance at life. As a young man, Frank loved playing hockey as a goal tender and watching his favorite NHL team, the Montreal Canadians. Frank, his brother Thomas, and his cousins Ronald and Robert (deceased) could be found drag racing and enjoying muscle cars on Woodward Avenue during the 1950s.
Once he graduated from high school, Frank joined St. Bonaventure Monastery and became a member of the Capuchin Franciscan Province of St. Joseph Order and served as a Monk for 10 years. Frank also, along with his parents, helped run the family-owned business "Mellnick's Bar" which was established in late 1960 and was located in Southwest Detroit.
Frank decided that he wanted to get married and start a family. He met a beautiful young lady by the name of Jane. The two of them fell in love and were married on May 31, 1975. Soon after, the Lord blessed them with a precious baby girl, Anne. They were overjoyed! Their family was not complete though until their son, John was born.
As a devout Catholic, Frank gave so much to the Church through volunteering, teaching Catechism, and participating in the various programs of the Church. He also instilled the value and importance of worshiping God and being grateful for all the goodness He provides. Frank was a devoted fan of the local NFL team and he never gave up hope for the Detroit Lions! Frank enjoyed playing video games with his grandson John Luke and telling jokes to everyone.
Frank made a lasting impact on everyone who was blessed to have had him in their life. He will forever be missed and never forgotten.
Frank A. Mellnick Jr. passed away on November 15, 2021 at the age of 83.
