Dewey
June 24, 1931 – May 12, 2022
Garth Edson Dewey died peacefully in his sleep on the afternoon of May 12, 2022, in Dearborn, Michigan, at the age of 90.
He was born in Vicksburg, MI on June 24, 1931, to Harold and Florence Dewey, growing up with his two older sisters, Patricia and Rosemarie. He developed an interest in car design during high school, submitting his ideas to the 17 th Annual General Motors Fisher Body Craftsman's Guild model car competition and was a state level award winner. He went on to earn a BS degree in Design Engineering from the University of Michigan. While in college, he played the trumpet in the Michigan marching band, which culminated with performing in Pasadena, California, when the U of M Wolverines won the Rose Bowl. As an alum, he played the sousaphone with the Alumni Band when attending Homecoming games.
Garth met his wife, Johanna Willertz, at University of Michigan during his last semester. They were engaged in August and married in November 1954. They raised three children, Karen, Linda and Kevin, and were happily married for nearly 54 years. The couple was very active in the Dearborn community and were avid supporters and attenders of music and the arts.
Having a passion for cars and car design, Garth worked primarily in the automotive industry, including Ford Motor Company and Chrysler Motors, as well as at Bricklin Canada ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bricklin_SV-1 ) and DeLorean Motor Company( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DMC_DeLorean ), helping to create experimental gullwing sports cars. He also worked at the missile and rocket company, Aerojet. He was initially hired at Ford Motor Company specifically to work on "project vehicles," including the Bordinat Cobra ( https://performance.ford.com/enthusiasts/newsroom/2018/01/long-lost-1963-_bordinat-cobra-concept.html ), the J Car ( https://www.google.com/search?q=ford+j+car+prototype&rlz=1C5CHFA_enUS704US704&oq=ford+j+car&aqs=chrome.4.69i57j69i59j0i512j46i512j0i512j0i7i30l5.11630j0j4&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8 ), and the GT 40, Mk IV ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_GT40 ), scroll down to the Mk IV, to see the red one Garth helped design, which now lives in the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn.
After his retirement in 1996, Garth continued his many hobbies and interests, particularly those involving art and music. He sang in HFC choirs: Vanguard Voices, HFC Chorus, Dearborn Summer Chorus, and Henry Ford Village Choir. He also took ceramics courses at HFC, and produced many works of art, which his children cherish.
Garth was preceded in death by Johanna, his beloved wife, and his sisters, Beverly Patricia (James) Anderson and Rosemarie Johnson.
Garth is survived by his children Karen (Bob) Taylor, Linda Dewey, G. Kevin (Anna) Dewey; his seven grandchildren Ben (Kerrie) Taylor, Zach Taylor, Shaddi Alnouri, Danny Alnouri, Aleksander Dewey, Elijah Dewey, Leah Dewey and one great granddaughter Vivian Taylor.
