Cassar
September 12, 1947 – August 17, 2024
George Cassar, passed away on August 17, 2024 at the age of 76.
George Cassar was born in Hamrun, Malta on September 12, 1947. He came to the US with his parents in 1952 and became a proud citizen after his military service. He graduated from St. Vincent High School in 1966 where he was awarded All City for basketball and also ran Track.
During the Vietnam War, he enlisted in the Marine Corp where he served a 13 month tour in Vietnam and was awarded two Purple Hearts among many other medals.
After the war, George worked for the Ford Motor Company Dearborn Assembly Plant for 42 years. Following his retirement, he worked for 10 years as a beloved security guard for The Henry Ford Academy, Dearborn, MI.
George coached basketball for 47 years. During his senior year he coached at St. Anne Grade School and lead the team to a CYO Championship, one of many. His long career as a coach also included: St. John the Baptist Catholic Church for 25 years, St Albert the Great, and St. Alfred until they closed followed by Sacred Heart, Pius the XX, and as an assistant coach at Light and Life and Federal Elementary.
He was a proud lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, Notre Dame Council followed by Patrick O'Kelly as a Third and Forth Degree Knight. George also was a member of American Legion Post #0232, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW 7546). He was a dedicated Eagle Member of The Henry Ford and Greenfield Village which he greatly enjoyed.
To his great joy and honor, he served as a Grand Marshal of the 2024 Dearborn Memorial Day Parade along with two other Purple Heart Recipients.
George is proceeded in death by his father Emmanual and mother Dolores and survived by his wife of 56 years, Dolores, his children Joseph (Susan), Catherine, and Gabriel (Lisa). His grandchildren Christopher, Stephanie, Nathan, Caitlin, Jacob, his great-grandchildren Tristan, Emmett, Gwendolyn, Colson and Elijah and his honorary granddaughter Karen.
Visitation will be held on Friday September 13th, 2024 from 2:00pm to 9:00pm, with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7:00pm at Howe Peterson Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 22456 Michigan Ave., 48124, 313-561-1500. Funeral Mass will be held Saturday September 14th, 2024, instate at 11:30am with funeral mass at 12:00pm at St. Maria Goretti, 3965 Merrick St, Dearborn Heights, MI 48125. Inurnment will be held at Great Lakes National Cemetery.
