Henry "Chuck" Stubbe

Jul 22, 1954 — Sep 22, 2026

Henry Charles “Chuck” Stubbe, 72, of Ypsilanti, MI, passed away Monday, Sept. 22, 2026 at Vibra Healthcare in Taylor, MI. He was born July 22, 1954 in Wayne, MI, the son of Henry and Mildred Stubbe. Chuck married Paula Johns on Jan. 2nd, 1995.

Chuck worked for United Wholesale for roughly 40 years as an associate. But more than anything, he was best known as, and most loved, being Coach Stubbe. Chuck coached baseball, football and wrestling for more than 50 years, earning his share of championships and victories, but most importantly, building young men. He coached boys, and men emerged.

Inspired by his coaches he had as a 1972 graduate at Churchill High School in Livonia, Chuck’s coaching career began when he himself was still in school. He coached youth football with the Dearborn Heights Redskins, Belleville Cougars and Taylor Seahawks and youth baseball with Dearborn Heights and Belleville Area Little Leagues, eventually starting the travel team in Belleville that went on to become the Belleville Posse.

In school athletics, Chuck coached at the middle school and high school levels, serving in coaching roles at McBride Middle School in Belleville and Robichaud High School in Dearborn Heights and Belleville High School.

While coaching, of course Chuck’s teams strived for victory, but molding his players into good young men and setting them up for future success on and off the field was his top priority. He took pride in seeing scores of his former players find their own success as coaches as they grew up, including his two sons, Shane and Tommy. Whether he coached them directly or his former players went on to coach them, thousands of young men (and even some young ladies) across several generations learned the lessons of Coach Stubbe.

Chuck also treasured the many friendships he made throughout his life, especially his lifelong best friends, Douglas Wright and George Panzoff. He loved sharing stories, whether they were about memorable moments with friends, his many years of coaching, or the shenanigans of his youth. Chuck was a natural storyteller and never missed an opportunity to make people laugh. He loved being a jokester and those who knew him best will remember the laughter and stories that followed wherever he went.

When he wasn’t coaching, Chuck could be found at local car shows or in his computer room, ordering collectibles or whatever the latest and greatest gadget was. But wherever he was, Chuck was always listening to a good tune: music like Garth Brooks, Elvis Presley and Bob Seger. Bob Seger’s “Against the Wind” was his theme song, a fitting soundtrack to a life lived on his own terms. His beloved Chihuahuas were his pride and joy and brought him companionship and happiness.

Surviving is his wife of 31 years, Paula; ex-wife, Elizabeth Stubbe-Zapico, six children, Elizabeth, Jennifer, Lisa (Erik), Shane (Brooke), Thomas (Kelsie) and Laura (Mason); 13 grandchildren, Victoria, Alexandra, Michael, Jaelyn, Ciara, Aneilia, Conor, Roman, Sadie and Julian, Bailey, Averie and Tommie Jo; and nine great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death are his parents and his brother, Jerry.
