Hugh “Jim” Berry, age 81, of Taylor, MI finished his last play on Saturday, April 18th, 2026 while at home with his wife, Mary McKay Berry.
Born in Tennessee on April 14th, 1945, Hugh spent his life telling stories, offering advice of the sages, and sharing his sense of humor and joy for life. You can only imagine the number of hobbies an 81-year-old man from the south might have; from golfing, coin collecting, and creating a garden/yard full of life and memories, to his infamous love of scratch-offs, Facebook, and love and passion for his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, neighbors, family and friends.
He claimed many titles in his time here on earth. “Dad” and “Papa” are probably the most prestigious, but he would have loved to have professional golfer, backup singer or dancer for Fleetwood Mac (his dance moves were impressive, and he sure did love that lead singer), Tigers superfan, or a title of your choosing on the list.
Hugh is survived by his wife, Mary, his children Jeff (Jamie), Sharon (Scott), Josh (Amy) and their combined 20 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren as well as his children through marriage with Mary; Amanda, Kristie (Dennis), and Jim (Korey) and 8 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He was proceeded in death by his wife, Joyce; daughter, Kimmy; and son, Brian.
There will be a celebration of Hugh’s life on Wednesday, May 6th beginning at 11:00am at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 15600 Trenton Rd., Southgate, MI with gathering time an hour before.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Hugh’s honor to the ALS Association, American Heart Association or the Detroit Tigers Foundation.
