Obituary

Jack Foren, of Dearborn, dear husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother, died Monday, April 6, at home. He was 85 years old. Papa was a wonderful role model and leader of the family, our "Rock of Gibralter." His gentle soul, humor and good nature guided us in life and will always remain with us. He set an example through his deep love and devotion to his family and his dedication to his occupation as a Dearborn police officer. His life's journey took him from a small Tennessee town to Detroit and then Dearborn, where he reared his family with his devoted wife of 64 years, Evelyn. Papa was very smart, a handyman who seemed to be able to solve any problem, and a humorist whose jokes and smile will be long remembered. He was easygoing by nature but practical and pragmatic and could cut to the heart of a problem and solve it. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and then joined the Dearborn Police Department, where he rose to be a detective sergeant. He was so renowned as a detective handling homicide investigations that years after he retired he was the subject of a display at the Police Department called "Tales from the Foren files." He continued to take pride in his friendship with his police colleagues long after he retired. He was also a member of the Masons. Jack's greatest achievement was his family, who revered him. He and his wife, Evelyn, met as teenagers attending Detroit Western High School and remained devoted for the rest of their lives. Besides Evelyn, survivors include daughters, Debbie Bechtel (Mike); Karen Foren Lake; and son, John (Teri Banas). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Amanda Vasas (Mike); Andrew Bechtel (Jackie); Katie Bechtel; Edward Lake III; Alex Lake; Jeffrey Lake; Erin Lake; Julianne Lake; Alicia Foren and Adam Foren. He delighted in his great-grandchild August Vasas and his continued friendship with his brother Bob. Friends may visit at the Dearborn Chapel of the Howe Peterson Funeral Home, 22546 Michigan Ave., Wednesday from 2-9 pm and Thursday from 9-11 am. Funeral services are Thursday at 11:00 am, with burial at Michigan Memorial Cemetery.
