James R. Woodyard, 89, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2026.
Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on July 18, 1936, James (Jim) lived a life marked by dedication to his family, quiet strength, and enduring love for those closest to him. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, EmmaJean Woodyard, with whom he shared 66 years of marriage, companionship, and cherished memories.
Jim is survived by: his son Mark Woodyard and his wife Sharon, along with their daughter Leeza; his son Michael Woodyard and his two children Ede and Jack; and by his daughter Mary Jean “MJ” Woodyard-Hall, her husband Howard “Chip”, and their daughter Remington. Jim was preceded in death by his son, William Woodyard. He leaves behind his brother Paul and his wife Betty Ann. In addition to his immediate family, he will be missed by sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Jim was a tenured professor for 40 years in the Wayne State University Department of Computer and Electrical Engineering. He was a successful researcher receiving numerous grants in support of his work. He also served on the Faculty Senate for many years.
Those who knew Jim will remember his wisdom, his unwavering commitment to any project he was involved with, along with his love of biking and sailing on Lake Huron. His presence brought comfort and stability to family and friends alike, and his legacy will live on through the many lives he touched.
Though he will be deeply missed, his family finds comfort in the countless memories they share and the lasting impact he made.
