Obituary

Janet Lee Lankford, age 91, of Dearborn. It is with deep sorrow and love that we announce the passing of Janet Lankford, who left us peacefully, surrounded by her sons, on July 24th, 2025. Precious daughter to the late Richard H. Drews and the late Edna Drews. Beloved wife of the late Bruce. Loving mother to Michael (Gail) and Paul (Dana). Dear sister of Richard E. Drews (Sally), the late Geraldine Whitcome (late Clark), the late Arlene Hargrave (late Lester). (She really tried to outlive everybody.) Grandmother to Laura Worrel (Chris), Kathy Gummerus (Gordon), Ryan Lankford, Sydney Lankford, and Peyton Rickman (Nolan). Proud great-grandmother to Penelope, Meredith, Grayson, George, and Chloe. She was known lovingly as "Aunt Janet" to 10 nieces and nephews, and many cousins. Janet was born in Dearborn, Michigan, on December 17th, 1933—right in the middle of the Great Depression—she grew up on Vassar Street and was educated through the Dearborn public school system, graduating from Dearborn High School in 1950. She was soon swept off her feet by her future husband, Bruce, and married in 1952. She devoted her life to her family, raising two children with grace and patience, always putting their needs before her own. During her early family life, Janet enjoyed snowmobiling and motorbiking in upper lower Michigan with her husband, sons, and a cast of family friends. One of her proudest memories was taking a cross-country motorcycle trip to California with Bruce. Years later, they settled into a more relaxed life of RV'ing. Janet managed a jewelry business for many years before working as a receptionist with her son at a commercial printer and eventually as a legal secretary prior to retirement. But even retirement didn't slow her down—Janet enjoyed her commitment to service by volunteering at Meals on Wheels into her 70s and then leading exercise classes at her senior living apartment complex well into her mid-80s. She would often tell her students they should 'never get outworked by an 85 year old.' Janet lived a full, vibrant life marked by respect, kindness, gratitude and an uncanny ability to keep everything clean and in its place...sadly, this was a trait she was unable to pass on to her youngest son. Janet lived her life in service to the Lord and those around her. Though she is no longer with us in body, her spirit, strength, and love will remain forever in the hearts of all who knew her.
