Joan Virginia
Handrinos
December 15, 1929 – March 21, 2020
Joan Virginia Handrinos died Saturday, March 21, 2020. She was 90 years old.
She was born Joan Delewsky in Detroit on Dec. 15, 1929 and graduated from Chadsey High
School. She lived in the Detroit area for nearly her entire life, including more than 50 years in
Southgate.
In 1949, she married Constantine "Gust" Handrinos, who preceded her in death in 2008 after
nearly 60 years of loving marriage.
Joan enjoyed sewing — none of her grandchildren went without a handmade quilt, and one
thought Joann Fabrics was named for her — as well as making stained glass and crafts of all
sorts. She cleaned up at bingo. She took memorable trips to Greece, Hawaii and Australia and
spent time at family cottages in Canadian Lakes, Michigan, and in Florida. She loved to spend
time with her grandchildren, and they loved to spend time with their Nana.
She is survived by children: Deborah Njus (David); and Dino (Jenny); son-in-law Brian Hurd;
brother Frank Delewsky (Bernice); and seven grandchildren: Elliot and Meredith Njus; Sherrie
and Thomas Handrinos; and Melanie, Brian and Alex Hurd (Emily). She was preceded in death
by her daughter Diana Hurd and brother Jerry Jarnot.
Interment will be at Our Lady of Hope Cemetery in Brownstown Township. Howe-Peterson
Funeral Home is handling arrangements. A memorial will be announced at a later date.
