John Kocan, age 94, of Westland, Michigan. Passed away Thursday, September 17. John was born on Feb 13, 1921 in Garany, Czechoslovakia to the late Michael and Barbara (Onderishen). He came to the US through Ellis Island in 1928. He is predeceased by his wife, Betty, his brother, Mike, and 2 sisters, Mary and Ann. He is survived by three children: Barbara (Frank) Shively, Carolyn (Gary) Gish, and Richard (Lynn). John is also survived by five grandchildren: Jennifer (Kirk) Gunderson, Alisa (Jon) Joyner, Kimberly Kocan, Neil (Amanda) Kocan and Erin Shively, 3 great-grandchildren: Gavin and Harper Joyner, and Garrett Gunderson. John served in the Army from 1943-45 in Guadalcanal and Bougainville in the Pacific. He was honorably discharged as a Technical Sergeant in the 974th Signal Service Company. Memorial Gathering Sunday September 20, 2-4 PM at the Taylor Chapel. Memorial Service immediately following visitation. Burial of cremated remains of John and Betty at Great Lakes National Cemetery will take place at a later date. Memorial tributes may be made to the Disabled American Veterans or the Veterans Administration.
