John M.
Matthews
January 28, 1931 – May 26, 2023
It is with great sadness we announce the death of our beloved husband and father, John M. Matthews. He died peacefully on Friday, May 26, 2023. He was 92, and recovering from a head injury suffered in a fall. He will be memorialized at 11:00 am June 24 at the First Presbyterian Church, 600 North Brady Road in Dearborn MI 48124, his spiritual home for 60+ years.
John met Doris, the love of his life, in kindergarten when they were just five years old. He knew they would marry while in the 4th grade. They married in 1954 and spent 68.5 wonderful years together. He was a loving father to John [Paula] Matthews, Steven [Diane] Matthews, and Philip Matthews. He was an adoring grandfather to Allison Matthews, Jessica [Chris] Newton, Sarah [Joel] Haynie, Rachel [Stephen] Mis, and the late Abigail Matthews. He was also a proud great grandfather to Liam and Carter Newton. He was a caring older brother to David [Liz survives] Matthews, who passed away in 2022. He also leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, and friends. John never met a stranger. Every person was just a friend he hadn't yet met.
As all the memories flood in, he will mostly be remembered for his kindness, humor, story telling, generosity, faithfulness, easy laugh, sparkling blue eyes, and love for his Lord and family. He attended Miami University, joined Sigma Chi, served in the Army during the Korean War, and returned home to Cincinnati, and ultimately graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in Economics. He was a pharmaceutical salesman, Kiwanian, an Elder and Deacon in the Presbyterian church, tennis and bridge player, voracious reader, and cheered heartily for the Cincinnati Bearcats and Detroit Tigers. We feel blessed he was such a huge part of our lives.
We appreciate your kind words of condolence and remembrance, warm wishes of peace, and continuing love as we remember a life very well lived.
