Obituary

Joseph H. Hallissey, Jr. 1928-2013 Joseph Hallissey, a civic leader and dedicated supporter of charitable causes in the Detroit area, died on September 5th, in St. Johns, FL, at 85, after a short illness. He was also a well-known business leader, the owner of Hallissey Travel Service, and later enjoyed a successful career in public education. He enjoyed his public life, but deeply loved his family and friends, to whom he was devoted and steadfast. Hallissey started his career in public service in Saugus, MA, where he began working for the YMCA, and from there went to YMCAs in Connecticut and finally Dearborn, MI. In 1968, after a successful capital building campaign at the Dearborn YMCA, he switched careers and as owner of Hallissey Travel began a successful vocation in the travel industry, becoming highly involved in the national and international associations that represented the traveler in the rapidly-changing travel world; he became the president of the American Society of Travel Agents in 1984, where he served for two years. While operating Hallissey Travel, he also began a historic partnership with Mike Adray, of Adray Appliance in Dearborn, running successive millage campaigns that raised millions of dollars in public funding for the Dearborn school system. While enjoying great success in those ventures, he also shared his energies with a variety of other charities in the Dearborn area, including Goodfellows, Centurions, the Rotary Club, the Dearborn Symphony as well as serving on the Chamber of Commerce for many years in a variety of leadership roles. After selling the travel agency, he began a new career in 2000 working in education, first with the Dearborn Public Schools in the communications department, and then as the Director of the Office of Development at Henry Ford Community College, in Dearborn, retiring from there in 2006. After retiring from HFCC in 2006, he moved with his wife, Veronica, from Dearborn to Gumee, IL, outside of Chicago, to be close to his two surviving sons and their families. He was husband to Veronica, father to Joseph III (Claudia), John (Lori), and the late David; grandfather to Mark and William Tortoriello, Joseph IV, Josh and Jessica; great friend to Mario Raspa, Mark Jacobson, John Holmes, John McDonald, Gary Kuhlman, Jim Doyle, George Bednar, and members of their families, and touched the lives of many, many people in Dearborn and in Chicago, both professionally and personally, and will be deeply missed. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the David J. Hallissey Memorial Scholarship with the University of Michigan Club of Greater Detroit, or The Joseph and Veronica Hallissey Scholarship Fund and the Joseph and Veronica Hallissey Endowed Scholarship Fund at Henry Ford Community College.
