Obituary

Lois Jean (Pat) Clark Lois Jean (Pat) Clark was born in Muscatine Iowa April 21, 1928, nee Dora Rosalie Rakey. At an age of eleven months Pat was adopted by George (Ray) and Alma Keeler who lovingly raised her as their only child in Marshalltown, Iowa. She was given a new name, Lois Jean, but was quickly given the nick name "Pat" by her uncle Pearl, the name by which she would be most often referred. Pat attended public schools in Marshalltown where she excelled in math and physics. She graduated from Marshalltown Iowa High School in 1946. She attended junior college and the University of Iowa from which she graduated with a degree in nursing in 1950. While a nursing freshman at the University, Pat met Arthur M. Clark, a medical student from from Humboldt Iowa. Their dates often involved hiking and dancing. Pat and Art were engaged in 1948 and married in Iowa City on June 17, 1950. After Pat earned her R.N. she worked in OB and became a Staff Nurse in Delivery and Nursery at the University of Iowa. Pat and Art moved to Detroit where she worked at Grace Harper Hospital in Detroit and Art interned in medicine at Detroit Receiving Hospital. Pat and Art moved to Dearborn, Michigan in 1952. On March 28, 1953, Pat gave birth to a daughter, Barbara Anne and on May 24, 1954, a second child, Thomas Randolph, was born. Pat was a woman of many skills with a keen, analytical mind and amazing ditigal dexterity. She was a genius at cards and became a Life Master bridge player. Pat was also an exceptional organ player. But her skills showed most brillantly in her domestic productions. She was an excellent seamtress and sewed many fine, tailored cothes for herself as well as her children. In later years, she extended her sewing work to upholstery. Pat was also a gourmet cook who loved planning and cooking elaborate meals for parties of friends and family. Family favorites were "Deviled" Pork Chops and Scandinavian spherical "pancakes" called Aebleskivers. The family still fondly recalls a children's pirate themed birthday party complete with colorful costumes and treasure chests made of loaves of bread and filled with sandwiches. Pat was an early and continuous supporter of women's rights. She was an active member of Detroit Chapter of Planned Parenthood for years and served as Representative of that organization. Her political interests extended to running for State Representative in the Michigan State Legislature at age 48 (1976). For sixty years Pat and Art traveled extensively, to Europe, Asia, India, South America, and Africa. In part, due to her interest in ancient and prehistoric humans, she had a particular affection for Rome and Egypt. For the last twenty-seven years of her life, Pat wintered in Naples, Florida, where she enjoyed playing music, walking the beach and socializing with a wide circle of friends from around the country. Pat had a magnetic personality and a warm Midwestern charm that attracted many friends. All of them and her family will sorely miss her. There is no doubt but that Pat's spirit will warm and comfort them for the rest of their lives. Pat is survived by her husband, Arthur M. Clark M.D., her son Thomas R. Clark, daughter-in-law Kathleen Clark, son-in-law Thomas Ziko, and granddaughters Natalie A. Clark M.D., Alexandra N. Clark, and Suzanna C. Ziko. Her daughter, Barbara Clark Ziko M.D., preceded her in death.
