Obituary

Mabel Valentine Carson Born: February 14, 1916 in Roaring Springs, Texas Died: October 19, 2015 Daughter of Rev. Ira and Lillie Smith. Registered nurse and World War II Army Veteran. Wife of the late Alfred. Mother of the late Allen (Mary). Grandmother of James (Caroline), Andrew (Jennifer), and Sean (Susan). Great-grandmother of Melissa, Nicholas, Kathryn, and Sophia. Mabel and her sister, Verlaine, married two brothers, Alfred and William Carson, and their two families were like one big family. She was a special aunt to Verlaine's children, William (Nancy) and Kirk (Deborah), and their families, and to Deborah Carson Skinner (Frank), daughter of the late Jack and Leva Carson. Mabel was also a dear sister to the late Leah, Eula, Ruby, Nora, Gladys, and I.A. and, although some of them and their families lived in other states, she loved to travel, to spend time with each of them and their families, and was a special aunt to their children and grandchildren. Mabel's grandson, Andy, posted the perfect description of his Grandma on Facebook: "Grandma was a great role model. I never heard her utter an unkind word about anybody. She was always there for friends and family when they needed a hand. She was woven in the fabric of the same church for other 50 years. Grandma joined the Army after nursing school knowing a war was coming. After the war she worked for the VA until retiring. She was a patriot and a proud supporter of the armed forces. Whenever I was away from home for the holidays she would send a care package full of homemade cookies, fudge, and peanut brittle." Mabel was compassionate, courageous, and greatly loved her family and friends. She was dearly loved in return and will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to The Disabled American Veterans or The Dearborn First United Methodist Church.
