Obituary

TODD, Marta H. May 26, 2015, age 89 Wife of the late Robert. Mother of Richard (Suzanne). Grandmother of Elaine Marie (Andrew) Kroczak. Great grandmother of Christian Michael, Noah Patrick, Luke Richard and Joshua Robert. Funeral Service Saturday 11:00 am at the Dearborn Chapel of the Howe-Peterson Funeral Home, 22546 Michigan Ave. Visitation Friday 1-9 pm. Memorials to Angela Hospice or Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Marta was the only child of Oscar and Marie Haensler, born on June 22, 1925 in Baltimore, Maryland. She was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Baltimore, Maryland in July of 1925. Marta studied the organ at John Hopkins Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Maryland. She was the organist at Faith and St. Mark's Church in Baltimore for several decades. She also worked as a medical assistant in the office of Adam Swiss M.D. until she retired in 1980. Marta met her husband of 50 years, Robert Todd, during a football game. Bob who was sitting a few rows higher than Marta and got her attention by throwing peanuts at her. They married on September 14, 1946 at Immanuel Lutheran Church. On December 12, 1950 their son and only child, Richard, was born. Marta and Bob enjoyed sailing on the Chesapeake Bay for over 30 years. They had many good memories of sailing with their friends in the Columbia Sailing Association. In fact, Marta and Bob along with another couple started the CSA. Some scary moments in their sailing life included being actually lifted up out of the water and flying from the Bay waters into a stand of trees along the shoreline during Hurricane Agnes. The marine weather had given the all clear because Agnes was heading out to sea but to everyone's dismay it abruptly turned into the Chesapeake Bay and caught everyone by surprise. Another scary moment was when a sudden thunderstorm came up in the Chesapeake Bay. A lightning strike hit the tow line of their dinghy and traveled up the tiller as Marta was steering the boat and Bob was trying to get the sails down. It wasn't until after the storm that Bob noticed Marta was bruised on the whole right side of her body which resulted from her being hit by lightning. Bob and Marta traveled twice across country, once by bus and once by train. They traveled to Hawaii twice and took many bus and car trips from Baltimore all along the Atlantic seaboard. In December of 1990 they moved from Baltimore, Maryland to Dearborn Heights, Michigan to be near their son Richard. They were offered and accepted Suzanne's parents' home that was now vacant after her last parent passed away in July of 1990. Marta and Bob became members of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Dearborn, Michigan. Her husband and the love of her life for 50 years, Bob, went to live with our Lord in 1996. Marta helped cook and serve for many Emmanuel Ladies Aid card parties and funeral luncheons. In addition, she also served as a hot lunch (great-grand) mom every Monday for the children at Emmanuel School. She enjoyed being a part of and watching her only grandchild, Elaine Marie, grow up and marry Andy Kroczak. She has many wonderful memories of being with her four great-grandsons, Christian (20), Noah (15), Luke (13) and Joshua (7). Marta liked camping in her trailer (next to Richard and Suzanne's trailer) in Jackson, Michigan on Portage Lake. She especially loved riding in her son's pontoon boat. It wasn't like sailing but she just enjoyed being out on the water even though it was only an inland lake and not the Chesapeake Bay. In her late 70's and early 80's Marta went parasailing in the Florida Keys and mushed a dog sled across a glacier in Alaska. Due to her failing health Marta's last three years were lived in an assistant-care facility. Marta's friendly and caring ways towards others made her very well liked among the other residents and staff. On May 26, 2015, the Lord finished the mansion he was creating for her and sent His angels to carry her home to Him. There is now an empty hole in our lives as we miss her very much. However, we know she is not only at peace but rejoicing in the heavenly realm with her husband Bob, and all her relatives and friends who have gone before her.
