Obituary

Marvin E. Campbell of Livonia passed away on February 10, 2010. He struggled with a number of illnesses in recent years. Marvin's wife of over 50 years, Dorothy, preceded him in death in 2008. Marvin was born on May 3, 1927 to parents, Wilfred and Ila Campbell, of Grosse Pointe Farms. While growing up in the Grosse Pointes, Marvin and his younger brother, Kenneth, delivered a newspaper route that included a number of automobile and Detroit area industry pioneers of the time including the Fords and Dodges. Marvin attended Grosse Pointe High School and graduated in 1944. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps upon reaching the minimum eligible age of 17 in 1944. He served during the war in Louisiana, Colorado, and the Pacific theater. After the war, Marvin returned home and attended Wayne University now Wayne State University. During the mid-1950's he met his bride to be Dorothy Balogh. They fell in love and were married in 1957. Dorothy was a school teacher in the Detroit schools and later moved to the Livonia schools teaching elementary music . The U.S Air Force was a significant part of Marvin's life. He joined the Air Force Reserve after college and served until retiring in 1978 with the rank of Major. He served at Selfridge Air Force Base and other posts while performing his reserve duties. Marvin had a very strong interest in his Scottish heritage. He and Dorothy were active members of several Scottish groups. Among them was the St. Andrew's Society of Detroit. Marvin was president of the Society in 1966 and was one of its longest tenured members. Marvin was also active in the group, Clan Campbell of North America, which is a Scottish heritage group for people with roots in the Campbell clan in Scotland. Marvin held numerous leadership roles with Clan Campbell. Marvin was also a long time member of the Masons – Lotus/Livonia Lodge and the Scottish Rite. Dorothy and Marvin enjoyed keeping up with family and friends both in the Detroit area and across the country from Boston to Ohio to California to Washington state. He and Dorothy were very much loved and appreciated and will be missed. Marvin is survived by niece Pamela Campbell Bickford Clifford, nephews Douglas CampbellAmada, Robert Dulgarian, Richard Anderson Sandra, Bruce Anderson Karee, David Anderson, and William Anderson Jodree , brother-in-law William Balogh Norma, and many grandnieces and grandnephews. Funeral Thursday 10 am at the Dearborn Chapel of the Howe-Peterson Funeral Home, 22546 Michigan Ave. Visitation Wednesday 5:30-9 pm.
