Obituary

Mary Gwendolyn Girvin lovingly known personally and professionally as "Gwen Girvin" went to be an Angel of the Lord on October 6, 2019 at the age of 82.  She was born March 5, 1937 to the late George McGowan and Marguerite Johnston, she was a graduate of Dearborn High School and attended some years of college.

She was genius class in the art of piano and voice having started playing at the age of 3 and performing at the age of 7, her artistic skills include concert pianist, professional singer, dancer, artist, poet, composer. In her career she was the opening act for Tina Turner and the lead singer for 8 years for Don Pablo and his Society Orchestra. She recorded with the studio that eventually was named Motown Studio in Detroit. She was well received at Bakers Keyboard.

She lived, performed and taught many years in California. In Temple City, California as she legendary as a well renowned clown Lucy Lovey. There she brought joy and influenced an entire generation of kids. Her over 67 years of creating having produced more than 350 pieces of artwork, she has written over 500 songs and over 1000 pieces of poetry and prose.

In her early life, she married Tom Girvin and in their 16 years together they had 4 children: Tommy Girvin (lead guitarist for Eddie Money and a well known children's entertainer in Florida "Mr. Tommy"), Tim Girvin (Kathy), Terri Girvin (actor/singer/dancer/comic in NYC), and Ted Girvin. As children, she formed Tommy, Timmy & Terri into a professional 3 part harmony group "The Rolling Express" that played regular gigs at restaurants, carnivals, super market openings and they were good enough to audition for the Ed Sullivan Show. She was preceded in death by sisters Veronica and Nancy. Her niece Jodi Pykor (daughter of Veronica and subsequently raised by Nancy) has been a loving supporter. She has grandchildren by Tommy (Tommy and Talia), Tim (Terra and Tracy), Ted (Tyler and Kylie).

On August 15, 2015 she married George Brennenstuhl.  She was the church musician at many churches the final one being Unity Chapel in Southgate, MI where she played and sang a solo each Sunday teaching and encouraging many others to sing solos, duets and trios for the congregation.  She was continually augmenting other musicians' abilities with her free help. She was indeed a giver of her love and talents to help others.  Her artistry was her whole life! She many times complained that she couldn't do much because she had no technical skills, George her husband and roadie said to her, "Just be my artist, I'll take care of all the rest". She was absolutely a unique and very talented woman who was loved by all, truly unforgettable and will be dearly missed.
