Obituary

Mike Joyce was born in Detroit, MI & was educated at Sacred Heart Elementary & High School in Dearborn, MI. He attended Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH until he entered the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He served his time in Germany & it was there that he was trained as an electrician. He pursued his profession when he returned, eventually earning a Master Electrician License. He spent 10 years with the DT&I Railroad & 30 years with Ford Motor Company. He retired in 1997. When Mike was 14, his parents were killed in an explosion & he was lovingly raised by his brother Bob & his wife, Rosemary, his brother James & his wife, Ruth & his sister Marie & her husband, Bob Enderle. He was very close to Judy's family, especially Dick & Lois Similuk. There is a large extended family--many nieces and nephews, who will cherish the memory of the one they knew as Uncle Mike, U of M, or Uncle Rotten Egg. Mike & Judy were married in 1959. Their children are Tim & Janet Joyce, and Maureen (Moe) & Rick Fernandez. Their grandchildren are Patrick & Daniel Joyce & Emma and Dugan Fernandez. Mike didn't have much of a "down" side. He usually took more than a casual interest in things that he liked. "Avid" would describe his love of fly fishing, hockey, computers in general, genealogy in particular. As he watched his children grow, he was their most "avid" fan no matter what they tackled. His most important job & most rewarding accomplishment was helping them to be good, honest, Christian citizens, loving spouses & excellent parents. Mike was active at Gesu & was loved by the Gesu Community. He took his Irish heritage very seriously. He could tell a good Irish story in a very convincing brogue. While in Ireland, he acquired an Irish wool cap, which he kept on a hook over the mantel. When he came into the house, he would hang the cap on the hook and announce "Himself is Home". God has surely welcomed Mike with open arms, and we can truly say.... "Himself is Home". As we celebrate the life of Mike, an avid Detroit sports fan, please feel free to wear any Tigers or Red Wings attire.
