Obituary

Patricia Ann Daoust (Sarle) was a gifted pianist, artist and creative thinker. She contributed her outstanding organizational skills, good humor, and keen intellect to varied community efforts, entertained often and accumulated a lifetime of memories filled with world travel, art and music, fine dining and loving friends and family. She is survived by her three daughters, Barbara (Daoust-Westbrooks), Carolyn (Daoust) and Deborah (Daoust), and several nieces and nephews.

Patricia was born in Des Moines, Iowa on May 15, 1924, grew up in Alexandria, Virginia, and returned to live in her childhood home during the Korean War, when her husband interned at Walter Reed Army Hospital. Their eldest daughter Barbara was born during this time, and the three moved to Michigan in 1955. Carolyn joined the family in 1959, and Deborah in 1961. The Daousts moved to Dearborn in 1964.

Growing up, Patricia excelled at academics and music. She served as her high school class president, earned a varsity athletic letter in field hockey, sang in choir and was voted by her classmates as most likely to succeed. She completed her undergraduate studies at University of Michigan and earned a master's degree there in Industrial Psychology. She also worked at the Institute for Social Research.

Patricia met her future husband, Patrick Henry Daoust, through her work as a Psychology teaching assistant. The two married in Ann Arbor on August 13, 1949, and Patricia then worked for General Motors as an Industrial Psychologist while Patrick completed medical school at Wayne State University.

Pat and Pat were together for 65 years until Patrick's death on Nov. 28, 2014 at the age of 89. While he pursued a career in radiology, they traveled to all parts of the globe, throughout North America, Asia, parts of Africa, the Middle East and to Europe on innumerable trips – at least one world journey each year. They collected all kinds of things on their travels, visited ancient sites and cities, toured museums and cathedrals and ate at celebrated restaurants.

Patrick and Patricia, a gourmet cook, entertained often and attended numerous food and wine events over many years. They also played classical music together (Patrick on violin), and Patricia arranged wonderful musical pieces for her own group, Lyric Piano Trio, which performed around the region over a number of years.  In the 1980s, Patricia wrote and illustrated a cookbook for her children containing favorite gourmet and family recipes that her children would call home to request.

Patricia was active in several community organizations in Dearborn including the American Association of University Women and WADOS (now Friends of the Dearborn Symphony), where she volunteered frequently, often entertained at the piano, and eventually served as President. She was a long-time member of the Dearborn Symphony Board of Directors, was instrumental in the founding and development of the Dearborn Orchestral Society Endowment Fund and key to the regrowth of the Dearborn Symphony. Patricia also co-chaired Music Medley, a highly successful fundraiser for the Dearborn Symphony, for 20 years. Music education was a true passion. In 1976, Patricia founded the Dearborn Youth Symphony, which has grown to include five ensembles and nearly 200 members from 25 metro Detroit communities.

During time at her home of 50 years on Brentwood Drive, Patricia nurtured many houseplants and loved to garden, especially amid the rose bushes she received from Patrick each year on Mother's Day. She enjoyed sketching and painting, particularly with acrylics and watercolors most recently. She also embroidered beautifully and delved creatively into various other crafts such as copper enameling and macramé. She sewed much of her own clothing, notably her formal gowns. She enjoyed shopping and amassed an impressive glove collection through her many years of travel.

Patricia lived a rich, full life. Although dementia in her final years robbed her of many of her incredible abilities, she still enjoyed reading, playing the piano and spending time with her family. Her supportive love, lithe spirit and compassionate wisdom will be sorely missed.
