Obituary

Paul Green, 91 years of age and a long-time resident of Dearborn, Michigan, passed away peacefully on the morning of December 26, 2022. Paul was born in Coldwater, MI on October 31, 1931 to George and Bertha Grenevitch. Paul later changed and simplified his family name to Green.

George and Bertha were first-generation immigrants who raised their eight children (four boys and four girls) on a small family farm in Albion, Michigan. His father worked as an inspector at the Union Steel Company in Albion; his mother worked at home and on the farm where they raised and sold vegetables. Paul worked from a young age, collecting and selling crickets and worms to local fishermen when he was 7; working in the Montgomery Ward catalog office organizing customer orders at age 13 and in the produce department at the local A&P supermarket at age 16. Paul was raised "it had to be done right or not at all" and he maintained that standard throughout his life.

Paul graduated from Albion High School in 1950, where he was a starting forward and prolific scorer on the basketball team. After high school, Paul attended Albion College for one semester before being accepted to attend General Motors Institute (GMI), now Kettering University. He completed GMI's five-year cooperative engineering program and graduated in 1955 with a Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Engineering. Upon graduation he went to work for Cadillac for a year before being drafted into the US Navy. Paul went through basic training at the Great Lakes Training Center near Chicago, then served for six months in the Bureau of Ships in Washington DC where he was assigned to determine the cause of failure of minesweeping vessels. After being honorably discharged, he was hired at the Ford Motor Company where he worked for 37 years until retirement in 1994. At Ford, Paul worked extensively in Product Development, and was recognized within the company as an expert in his field. His final performance review noted that "Mr. Green is recognized as the corporate authority on Interior Lighting" and he was awarded a US Patent for his innovative "Vehicle Lamp Assembly" in 1992.

Paul purchased his first property in 1958, a three-unit income in East Dearborn. He married his wife of 63 years, Gina Miranda Basso, in August 1959 and they lived in the first floor unit and rented out the two second floor flats. Their first son, Mark, was born in 1962, their second son, Michael, was born in 1965, and their third son, David, was born in 1968. In 1965, Paul purchased a 140 acre farm outside Milan, MI where he and his family lived for three years from 1969-1972. In 1972 they moved back to Dearborn into a new home on Culver Street, near the Ford Engineering facility where Paul worked, and where he lived for the next 50 years. Paul purchased additional farmland in the Milan area in 1972. He enjoyed working on numerous projects at the farm over his lifetime, including constructing several buildings, a large pond for swimming and fishing, and an extensive tree nursery. In his autobiography, Paul wrote that some of his favorite memories were taking his boys to Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Petrified Forest and many other national parks in their travel trailer.

Paul is survived by his wife of 63 years, Gina Miranda Green; his three sons, Mark, Michael and David; his nine grandchildren, Ryan, Ethan, Meredith, Macy, Harrison, Holden, Eric, Maggie and Emily; and two great-grandchildren, Anna-Lynn and Magnolia.
