Obituary

Schroeder, Paula Joanne Goodwin of Dearborn died June 17, 2014 at Angela Hospice in Livonia. She was 67 years old. Paula was born October 28, 1946 in Baltimore, Maryland to Pauline Elizabeth (nee Keller) and Thomas Joseph Goodwin, the middle sister of the acclaimed Goodwin Three. As a young girl, Paula moved to State College, Pennsylvania where her Dad finished college after WWII, then to Braintree Massachusetts and eventually to Penfield, NY. In high school, Paula perfected the "Bolger back breakers", cheerleading jumps making each girl look like either the letter O or X. Today that might be considered torturous or at least ill advised. That technique attracted the attention of a certain upperclassman, maybe more than one. After graduating from Penfield Central High, Paula pursued a degree in Elementary Education at Pennsylvania State University following in her parents' footsteps. She taught elementary students for several years in districts around Rochester, NY until that certain upperclassman came to his senses and proposed after a 9-year courtship. They were married at Colgate Rochester Divinity School, exchanging vows that each had written. Then off to Dearborn, where her husband had joined Ford Motor in the Purchasing Department. One beautiful daughter arrived and then another. Paula stayed busy with the girls' activities, finding time to be President of a local co-op nursery school and troop leader for neighborhood girl scouts. Her interest in design and architecture led her to tech classes at HFCC which prepared her to fully design the addition that sits on the east side of the family home. Paula worked on a variety of crafts, both bought and self-designed, enjoying especially sharing projects with her grandchildren. She also was a great student and maker of quilts. Her personally designed and hand-made beauties have been valued by relatives and friends receiving them as gifts. Several remain on display in the family home. Paula was a gracious, warm and caring person, both to those she knew and those she just met. And a joy to know and be with. She was generous, forgiving and able to think of others, even during her illness. Paula was a devoted sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. She was deeply loved and will be sorely missed. Paula is survived by her loving spouse Stephen G. Schroeder, her children Brynne Schroeder Nayle (Roger) of Charlotte, NC and Beth Aimee Schroeder (Athear Najor) of Royal Oak, her grandchildren Stephen Erick Larson and Morgan Paige Nayle of Charlotte, NC, her dear siblings Karen Goodwin Lynd (James) of Penfield, NY and Connie Goodwin Motsenbocker (Ken) of Macedon, NY and many wonderful nieces and nephews. Paula is preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Paulie Goodwin of Penfield, NY. Visitation will be at the Dearborn Chapel of the Howe-Peterson Funeral Home, 22546 Michigan Avenue , Friday 5-8pm and Saturday 10-11am; funeral service to follow at 11 am. www.howepeterson.com
