Obituary

In Loving Memory of Remo B. Porchia Remo B. Porchia was born in Arnold, PA on July 30, 1935 to Giuseppe and Nicolina Porchia. Remo (Ray) attended Arnold High School where he graduated in 1953. He attended Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan where he received his Bachelor's Degree and then later his Master's in Education. His love of learning took him just two credits shy of his Doctorate, while his love for his family took priority. He began his teaching career in 1958 teaching industrial arts at Annapolis Junior High in Dearborn Heights, MI. In that same year, he married Elizabeth (Betty) M. Tadrzak on August 9. Over the next seven years, they would welcome their five children, Joseph, Remo Jr., Rosa, Robert, and David. His teaching career shifted slightly in 1964 when Ray was appointed counselor at O. W. Best Jr. High. In 1966, he became the staff assistant to the superintendent until 1968. It was in that same year, that Ray served as the construction supervisor for the building of O. W. Best Junior High and was later appointed assistant principal. This is where Ray would spend most of his career. Over the next 25 years, Ray would also serve as principal at Polk Elementary, Pardee Elementary and Interim Superintendent for Dearborn Heights District 7. While spending 35 years in a career that he loved would seem like a dream job, Ray wasn't done yet. He spent the first seven years following his official retirement returning to Dearborn Heights District 7 to serve as a substitute principal when he was needed. Ray said, "The best part of my job is following a child's progress through high school, watching them walk across the stage and receive a diploma." Over his career, he would witness thousands of students reaching that milestone and then followed many of them into their adult lives and careers. An early hobby that Ray enjoyed was talking on his CB Radio. It was through this hobby that Ray and his wife Betty met many of their dearest friends. He spent many hours talking to truckers passing through the area under the handle of "Silver Ghost". One year, his kids took over the radio as they listened to the latest sightings of Santa, and tried to figure out when their gifts would arrive. Following his retirement, Ray and his wife enjoyed several vacations including a trip to Toronto, two trips to Hawaii, a trip to San Francisco, CA, and an adventure to Key West, Florida. One of Ray's favorite things to do in his retirement was spending time with his "boys" working on whatever their weekend project entailed. Whether it was building shelves, finishing a basement, building a garage or changing the oil in the car, Ray had his hand in it or he was supervising the job. As his grandsons grew up, they were included in these projects and learned from working along with their Papa. Ray had a passion for cars and specifically, Buicks. It was not unlike Ray to arrive home with a new car as a surprise to his family. He would pull into the driveway and beep the horn and the kids would run out to greet him. He had the biggest smile on his face as he took them for their first ride in the new car around the block. He participated in several Telegraph Cruises in his treasured 1987 Buick Grand National. This same love of cars is shared by his sons and grandsons. Remo B. Porchia is survived by his wife of 54 years, Betty, his children Joe (Kim), Rosa Griesinger (Brian), Robert (Tonjia), and David (Michelle), his grandchildren Todd (Caroline) Freitag, Kristen MacInnis (Scott), Kasey Freitag, Megan, Remo, Matthew Griesinger, Alexander, Nicolette Griesinger, and Alyson.
