Obituary

Richard Herrmann passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family on July 20, 2020 at the age of 76 after a 16 year battle with cancer.

Loving husband of Diane and the late Andrea. Beloved father of Richard (Siobhan), Carrie, Michelle, the late Kevin, Steven, and stepfather of Michelle.  Proud Grandfather of Adam, Angela, Thomas, Colleen, Nicole, Mary, Anne, John Paul, Megan, James, Jane, Clare, and Wiley.  Loving Brother of Geraldine, Glen, Gary, Chrstine, William, and the late Charles.

After graduating from Hamtramck High School in 1961, Rich held a variety of jobs including working for the Hamtramck DPW, and as a hay baler.  Rich earned a bachelor's degree from Wayne State University.  Later he worked as an x-ray technician at Beaumont Hospital, and at General Motors in the smog chamber.  Rich retired from Ford Motor Company in 2011 after 26 years in their IT Department.

Rich was famous for being a master of (bad) Dad/Grandpa jokes and puns.  He enjoyed doing things with his family and friends including traveling with Diane, and watching his kids and grandkids play soccer, tennis, wrestle, weight lift, and perform in music festivals.  In his later years he was able to knock off bucket list items like hot air ballooning and visiting the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville.

Rich also had a passion for gardening, fishing, photography, camping, and Polish food.  His children all have lifelong memories of their annual camping trips to Sleeper State Park and still carry on that tradition.

He was a master at growing a variety of exotic vegetables and flowers even in a small backyard.  In his last months, he still planted an extensive garden in the space on his deck.  Rich shared not only his plants but his extensive gardening knowledge with everyone he knew.

Rich always looked forward to the annual fishing trip with his brothers who were amazed when he often caught the biggest fish of the trip.

Photography was another passion of Rich's.  He loved to take pictures (especially of sunsets) and always seemed to have had a camera in his hand.

Rich will be greatly missed by his family and friends all of whom he touched with his wacky sense of humor, warm personality, and generosity.  Rich would have liked to end this:  "see ya' round like a donut".
