Richard died in Beaumont Hospice at Beaumont Hospital, Oakwood Campus on December 19, 2017 from complications of emphysema due to smoking. He was 69 years old. He was born June 4, 1948 at the old Providence Hospital on West Grand Boulevard in Detroit, MI.
Richard was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Parish in Dearborn, MI. He served there as an altar boy and an usher for over 60 years. He was also a member of the Father Patrick O'Kelley Knights of Columbus in Dearborn for many years and was their recording secretary.
Richard graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1966 and Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree and a major in Political Science in 1971. He retired from the Ford Motor Credit Company and remained in his Dearborn home until recently.
He was a competitive swimmer and member of several teams including Patton Pool in Detroit, Sacred Heart High School in Dearborn and the Dearborn Country Club. He also swam in the Master's Swim Program for the Ford Motor Company FAST team. In 1965, he won the class B State Championship for the 200 yd. Individual Medley.
Richard remained single all his life but belonged to a large, much-loved extended family. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Evelyn (nee Maher) Szuba, his father, Anthony Szuba, DDS, and his youngest brother, Martin Peter Szuba, M.D. He is succeeded by his siblings Mary Jo (Lawrence) Crane, Christine (David) Carroll, John (Irene) Szuba, Tom (Telethia) Szuba and sister-in-law, Geralyn Groh-Szuba.
Richard particularly loved his nephews and nieces. They include Mary Christine Oleszek (David Levine) and their children, Margaret and Alexander Levine. Jeffrey (Danielle) Carroll and their son Sean Carroll. Ryan(Lisa Lipinski) Carroll, Daniel Szuba, Timothy Szuba, Matthew (Kristen) Szuba, Kaitlyn C. Szuba, Jared Szuba and Michael Szuba.
He will be greatly missed by us all.
