Robert George
Crongeyer
February 15, 1950 – August 9, 2020
Robert George Crongeyer, 70 years young, quietly passed away on Sunday, August 9, 2020 of natural causes.
Bob was preceded in death by his loving parents Angie and Jerry Crongeyer.
Bob is survived by his beautiful daughters Casey Sloan, Colleen, and Robyn Crongeyer along with their dear mother Beatriz Hernandez.
Bob is also survived by his kin, Jerry Patrick (JP), Annette (Stuart Collins), Janie (Greg Casey), Jim and Mary Angela.
Robert leaves behind many relatives, including Aunt Rosalie and Dick Metric, Aunt Joanne Tylutki, cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and a myriad of friends from all walks of life who will miss him dearly.
Bob was born on February 15, 1950 in Detroit, Michigan. He attended Gesu Catholic Elementary School, Catholic Central and Brother Rice High Schools. He went to the University of Southern California, Michigan State University, Oakland Community College, and Foothill College in Palo Alto (north CA).
Bob had many aliases...Crunchy, Bobby Kinghawk, R.G., and Archie! He was known for dishing out nicknames to nearly every family member, many friends and some acquaintances... a lot of those names have left their impressions forever!
R.G. was blessed with a sharp mind and quick responses which helped him excel in school and in sports! He began throwing, catching and batting balls at age 2! His Mom and Dad used to say that Robert could sit in his baby buggy and correctly rattle off the names of cars as they passed them! He enjoyed watching all sports his whole life either on television or in person. He loved football, basketball, baseball, hockey and golf!
He also liked hunting and going to the gun range with family and friends. He was a skilled painter. When Bob was in his late teens and early twenties, he and his brother JP would paint Gesu School every single summer, rotating around the school! They were brave to hold on to each other "at the seat of their pants" as they stuck their arms and bodies out of the window on the third floor to do the job when the scaffold didn't reach! Every summer his whole life, he enjoyed camping at Camp Dearborn with his family at their large Family Reunions! 2020 was the first year he missed this since 1950...all because of Covid.
R.G. loved jazz, rock 'n' roll, rhythm and blues, blues, oldies and every type of music! He instilled this love and appreciation of music in his daughters Colleen and Robyn and would bring them to concerts, to music lessons, and later on, he got to enjoy their many gigs for many years! When Colleen was a young girl, he would drive her 40 miles one way for harmonica lessons with Baby Robyn in his arms! Then before long they took voice lessons and Robyn had piano lessons. The girls both were musical prodigies and well known in the Detroit area as they played alongside some very special famous musicians! They put on many benefit concerts for special causes, another passion of R.G.'s. "Dad" was their Number #1 Fan and was always there in the background supporting and enjoying their performances. In addition to music, the girls were skilled in multi black belt levels of Tung So Do karate, a passion RG had but was unable to participate in due to sports injuries.
Robert was a gifted and disciplined athlete. He played 1st string on both the football and basketball teams as a sophomore at Catholic Central leading his teams to victory and helping CC become the Best in State! Robert continued to attend Catholic Central games and events for football, basketball, baseball, wrestling and hockey where he would reconnect with his friends and watch their kids or their grandkids play...even his nephew played football and wrestled for CC! Robert also kept in touch with many of his former coaches, teachers and Priests! His signature goodbye was, "Love ya Brother"! Those friendships from Catholic Central and Gesu remained a big part of Robert"s life right up until his very last day.
R.G. reached out to help folks in need. He served some families by caring for their elderly family members on a regular basis and offered doing extra jobs such as painting, yard work and running errands for them! He loved their company and their stories! He would bring them love and laughter...and sometimes his dog "Spunky" a.k.a. "Buster"! R.G. had a generous heart. He was involved with "Hands That Help" (a group of prominent Detroiters who visited Nursing Homes). R.G. offered to do security duty at Holy Trinity Church, guarding the church while the homeless spent the night there in the winters. He also enjoyed helping out in any way that he could at Saint Anne's by the Bridge, including driving his daughters to choir practice and Mass for many years!
Bob always enjoyed a good meal! He had really good taste! If he came to your barbecue, he would bring some killer Amish chicken that was to die for! He loved to grill outside and had many barbecues over the years with family and friends! When you were with Bob, you could enjoy his ear to ear smile when he heard a good joke or story! He would close his squinty eyes, his head would bob up and down and he'd let out a deep belly laugh! He was a great prankster, "bear-hugger", and loved a good time. Bob made connections and friends wherever he'd go... often recalling names and faces and always seemed to know "someone who knew someone"! A real gift!
Although there were many hardships that Bob and his dear family endured, he constantly reminded everyone that he was grateful for his life experiences and for his friends of many decades. Bob often boasted how proud he was of his daughters! Many folks will attest to his generous nature and offering a helping hand as much as he could. We will remember Bob for many many things that he did while he was on earth and the mark that he left!
May Bob rest in the Arms of Jesus!
Lovingly submitted by his family.
