Robert Edward Smith

Robert “Bob” Edward Smith, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, and faithful servant of God, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2026, surrounded by his family in Dearborn, Michigan. He was born on January 6, 1944.

Bob proudly served his country as a member of the United States Air Force from 1962 to 1966 and later continued his military service with the Air National Guard from November 1971 through December 1994. His years of service gave him the opportunity to travel throughout the world, an experience he greatly valued. During his military career, Bob earned numerous honors and awards, including the Meritorious Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, overseas ribbons, and other commendations in recognition of his dedicated service.

Following his military career, Bob continued his education at Wayne State University and the Whitaker School of Theology. In September 1996, he was ordained as a deacon in the Episcopal Church. He faithfully served as a deacon for the remainder of his life, ministering primarily at Trinity Church Detroit and Christ Church Detroit. His faith was an important part of who he was, and he remained a regular member of Christ Episcopal Church parish in Dearborn, where he found fellowship and community.

On August 24, 1968, Bob married the love of his life, Sharon L. Smith, in Detroit, Michigan. Together they built a life centered on family, faith, service, and love. Bob and Sharon were blessed with three children: Sean Robert Smith (Ellen Thackery), Dawn Marie Sweeney (Eric Sweeney), and Jessica Ann Brace (Kevin Brace). He was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren: Ciera, Selah, Finnegan, Brynne, Maren, Whittaker, and Holden.

Bob will be remembered and cherished as a kind, intelligent, generous, and giving man. He was a good Christian whose faith was reflected not only in his words, but in the way he lived and served others. He had a welcoming spirit and a genuine friendship to offer to all who crossed his path. His years of service to his country, his church, and his family were a testament to the values he held dear.

Bob leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, service, and kindness that will continue through the many lives he touched. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sharon, his three children and their spouses, his seven grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, September 14th, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church in Dearborn, Michigan (120 N. Military Ave., Dearborn, Michigan 48124).
