Roger L.
Barrows
June 9, 1947 – March 9, 2021
Roger Barrows passed away on March 9, 2021 at the age of 73.
Beloved husband of Patsy for just shy of 23 years.
Loving father of Andy (E Ki) Barrows and Beth Barrows and step father of Christy (Michael) Dery, Roberta (Dooley) Helton and Joe (Vicky) Olszewski.
Cherished grandfather of Jessica (Eddy), Amanda (Mark), DJ (Shanda), Michael, Jannie (Michael), Carissa and Nicole (Anthony).
Proud great grandfather of Autumn, Gracie, Makayla, Leah, Chloe, Addy, Rebecca, Anna, Abby and his special little buddy Hayden.
Dear brother of Sandy.
Roger was born in Detroit to his parents Robert and Maxine. He grew up learning the values of hard work. His dad worked for Ford Motor Company and began showing Roger how to work on cars at a very young age. This blossomed into a lifelong passion of Roger's. His father owned a Model A that he fell in love with. He would decorate it as a float for parades when he was young.
Once he approached driving age, he had put in many hours of hard work at the local super market and had saved up enough to buy his own car upon turning 16. This is when his love of drag racing began! He and his other teenage buddies would race up and down Telegraph. Eventually he made it to Detroit Dragway and Milan Dragway.
When Roger turned 19, he began his career with the Norfolk Western Railroad. The men there took to him right away and showed him the ropes. He loved his job. He built lifelong friendships during his career. He saw many sights that very few would ever experience while driving the trains through the states.
One day while enjoying the game at Casey's Pub in Corktown, his attention was diverted to a beautiful young lady by the name of Patsy. They hit it off right away and 4 years later they were married. They spent 22 wonderful years as man and wife. Patsy was fully supportive of his other love, cars! The two of them would travel to different states to go to car meets, making friends along the way.
There was a condo in Florida that they loved to go to and enjoy the good life, creating priceless memories that they both cherished. Roger loved fishing in general but it was a special treat to jump on a charter boat, hit the open ocean and do some deep sea fishing.
At home there was always a project going in the garage. His latest was his own 1930's model A. The ultimate goal was to get it all souped up and paint it bright red. Unfortunately, it is still awaiting that paint job. Perhaps his great grandson and little buddy, Hayden, will one day complete what his Papa started and look back at all that he taught him in that garage when he was growing up.
Roger never shied away from a good time and this lent to him making so many friends throughout his time here on earth. There are so many memories of times gone by that will bring a smile when they come to mind. He will be sorely missed but his memory will live on with every story shared.
