Roger D. Zeigler
September 29, 1938 – July 30, 2021
Roger Zeigler was born in Eden, Ohio from Alice Marscheider and Chauncey Zeigler. He grew up in the Sylvania and Toledo areas and worked on a family farm during his teen years. In 1970, he moved to Taylor, Michigan, to work as a design engineer at Ford Motor Company. He retired on April 1, 2000, after thirty years.
In May 2004, Roger and his wife, Nancy, fulfilled his lifelong dream of living in the West; they moved to Prescott, Arizona, where they became actively involved in social justice organizations and produced a Local Access TV program, "I Believe: Conversations with Progressive Activists."
After six years, they returned to Michigan and joined the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Detroit. Roger pursued his interests in gardening, wood working, and golf. He loved to cook and was the household chef extraordinaire . With Nancy, he attended literary readings in the community. He was a lover of classical music, which he listened to while he worked.
Roger embraced the UU principles, but the one which his life best reflects is "Justice, equity and compassion in human relations." He lived his life with love for family and friends. He was a generous man, supporting others at times of need and despair. To the very last moment, he loved his wife, his sons and grandchildren, his sisters, and friends.
Roger is survived by his wife Nancy Owen Nelson, his sons, Mark Zeigler (Brenda), Michael Zeigler (Derethia), Matthew Zeigler (Liz), his stepson Owen McCord, seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and his sisters, Shirley Shaver and Susie Roehrs.
A memorial service will be held at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Detroit, 4605 Cass Avenue, Detroit, on Saturday, August 14, at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center, Montgomery Alabama. https://www.splcenter.org/
