March 15, 1943 – July 4, 2018
Ronald Sylvester Marmarelli, age 75, of Mount Pleasant, Mich., passed away Wednesday, July 4, 2018, at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, with his family by his side. Ron was born March 15, 1943, in Pittsburgh and went to school there graduating from Duquesne University, where he met his wife of 49 years, Deborah. After college, Ron served in the Army from 1966-1968, then worked as a reporter for the Lancaster New Era in Lancaster, Pa., for several years before earning a master's degree at Temple University in Philadelphia. He went on to complete doctoral coursework at Michigan State University and teach in the journalism department at Central Michigan University for more than 35 years. Ron was dearly loved by his family, who will remember fondly his quirky sense of humor, his impeccable taste in music, his enduring love for Pittsburgh sports, and his quiet devotion to those he loved. Ron is survived by his wife, Deborah; daughters Trina (Darrell) of Portland, Ore., and Marissa Beth (Tim) of Berkley, Mich. ; grandsons Charlie and James Schroeter; and brother David (Lynn) Marmarelli of Allison Park, Pa. Ron was especially proud of the hundreds of young journalists he taught throughout the years and enjoyed keeping in touch with many of them on Twitter. A scholarship fund at Central Michigan University has been established in his memory, in lieu of flowers gifts can be made online at https://www.cmich.edu/advancement/giving/Pages/Fund.aspx?Fund=Marmarelli_Mem#/Fund .
