Obituary

Sadie Khalil, a long time Corktown resident, passed away on November 5, 2009, at her home, at the age of 99. She was born on September 11, 1910, in New Castle PA. After her marriage to Thomas Khalil in 1931, she moved to Detroit. After her husband's death in 1949, with 4 sons to support, she took over the operation of Khalil's Grocery, a neighborhood store on Wabash that had been operated by her husband. She later built a new store on Vermont, which she operated until 1963. After completing her high school education at Cass Tech High School and attending Marygrove College and Wayne State University, she realized her life long ambition to be a school teacher. She taught first grade at St. Francis Cabrini, in Allen Park MI from 1965 until 1970. She then turned to traveling, another life long ambition. She went cross country, once by train and a second time by bus. She went to Europe three times. She spent many winters in Florida and in Las Vegas. Throughout her long life she generously opened her home to several families when they moved to Detroit to open businesses. She was a loving grandmother who welcomed her grandchildren's friends as her own. She is survived by 2 sons, Samier and Thomas, who, along with his wife Judith Sale and sister in law Dolores Khalil, cared for her in the final stage of her life. She is also survived by many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Two sons, Monier and Faris, preceded her in death. Funeral service Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. at the Fort St. Presbyterian Church 631 W.
