It is with sadness and profound gratitude for his life, that we announce the passing of our beloved brother Steve Kalder. He died peacefully on May 26, 2026, at the age of 74. Born on September 13, 1951 in Detroit, Steve was a gentle soul, loved by all who knew him.
Steve was the son of the late Robert and Kathryn Kalder, who instilled in him the values of kindness, generosity, and love of family. These values stuck with him throughout his life and he shared a close bond with his sisters Sue (Jim) Kalder and Nancy (Sam) Campbell, who survive him.
An alumnus of Western Michigan University and Ferris State College, he served as supervisor at the Observer Eccentric Newspaper until the company closed in 2007. Steve was an ardent supporter of the Michigan Humane Society and also contributed greatly to local food banks, reflecting his compassionate nature and desire to help others.
A true outdoorsman, Steve enjoyed hunting and fishing, activities that connected him with the beauty of nature. He had a love of sports, having played basketball and hockey earlier in life, and then as a staunch fan of the Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Tigers and Michigan State teams.
Steve will be remembered as a gentle spirit, an exceptionally generous person and a kind and giving friend. He had an unwavering love of his family and treasured time spent with them, always being there for them in good times and in bad.
In recent years, Steve enjoyed a deep and comforting relationship with Jesus, finding solace and strength in his faith. In spite of his many and serious health problems, Steve felt God's presence and comfort.
The family extends their deep gratitude to Liz, Bethanie, Kate and Jodylynn, Steve's team from Heart to Heart Hospice. Their compassion, care, and support to Steve and to us, ensured that Steve had comfort and dignity in his last days.
The family is proud of Steve's legacy of love, kindness and generosity that he will be remembered for. His gentle spirit will remain in our hearts. Steve, you greatly enriched our lives with your warmth and love and you will be deeply missed.
In keeping with Steve's humble nature, per his request, there will be no public services.
