Dr. Thomas Clinton Mawhinney, 81 years old, resident of Dearborn, MI, passed away Wednesday, September 27, 2023, in the care of Angela's Hospice at Allegria Village. Born on February 27, 1942, in Tampa, FL, to Clinton and Mable Mawhinney, Tom spent most of his early years growing up in Miami, Florida. As a young man, Tom served in the US Army, stationed in Germany. Tom earned his B.A. and M.S. degrees from the University of South Florida and his Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from Ohio State University. Tom had a long and successful career in the field of Behavior Analysis, teaching for over 30 years as a Professor of Organizational Behavior and Human Resources Management at the University of Detroit Mercy.  His work was published in many business journals and academies. Tom was also the editor of the Journal of OBM, considered to be a groundbreaking publication and a role Tom thoroughly enjoyed. Tom had a rich and full life. He loved teaching, traveling with his wife, Betty, flying a small plane around Florida in his youth, scuba diving, cycling, serving in the military as a medic, cooking for friends, and storytelling. Tom was a compassionate man, having a desire to help others. He also had a great smile and loved to laugh! Memories of Florida life could always bring a chuckle. Tom and Betty lived for many years at 10 Danvers Lane in the Foundation in Dearborn. He is preceded in death my his beloved wife of 34 years, Betty (Elizabeth Crall Mawhinney) and his elder sister, Jimmie Joyce Wickham, who both passed away last year. Tom is survived by his brother, Bill Mawhinney (Shorty) of Sebring, FL, and many nephews and nieces, as well as other family and friends. After a short battle with Alzheimer's, Tom passed away peacefully with the care of his hospice nurses. Tom lived a long and happy life with his wife, Betty, and will be missed by his friends and family. A memorial service will be held to honor Dr. Thomas Mawhinney at Dearborn First United Methodist Church 22124 Garrison, Dearborn, Mi, Saturday, October 21, 2023, 10:00 a.m. All are welcome.
