Obituary

Thomas Richard Sparrow died peacefully at home on June 9, 2024, after a brief illness. Born in Wyandotte, Michigan, to Thomas Henry Sparrow and Maude Pauline Blair, Tom attended Michigan State University, earning bachelor's and master's degrees. He served in the US Army in Germany, and in 1959, he married Carol Ann Webb, with whom he had four children.

Tom was a beloved teacher, principal, and administrator in the Wyandotte Public Schools system and Hartland Consolidated Schools, and he kept in touch with many of his former students, including alumni of Project SEE (Strategies for Environmental Education), which introduced young people of the early 1970s to ecology and sustainability.

Upon retiring from teaching, Tom moved to Montpelier, Vermont, where he became a well-known performer as half of the satirical duo The State House Steps and dedicated many hours to genealogy, creating a website with over 7000 names. In 2004, Tom returned to Michigan and married his final partner in life and in song, Julie.

Tom was born under a wandering star, but golf and music remained constants throughout his life. Up until his death he remained an active member of the Players Guild of Dearborn, performing in numerous productions, leading as president, serving as webmaster, and managing ticket sales with Julie, whom he met through their shared love of musical theater. With two holes in one to his credit, Tom loved golfing with friends and with his three sons at courses across Michigan and Vermont, particularly at the Barre Country Club, living by the motto "Easy swing, easy game."

Tom is survived by his beloved wife, Julie Chatterton Sparrow; children, Jennifer (Robert Harris), Thomas Hammond, Richard Blair, William Tremewan (Aubrey); sister, Betsy Sparrow Wareing; and grandchildren, Jack, Henry, Sophie, Adsel, Kara, and Charlie. He was a dog lover who looked forward to visiting the Rainbow Bridge, where we hope he is now, playing with Rosie and Zoey.

In lieu of a service, the family invites donations in Tom's memory to the Players Guild of Dearborn, to continue his legacy of supporting community theater. https://www.playersguildofdearborn.org/support-us/

Thomas has been entrusted to the care of Howe-Peterson Funeral & Cremation Services, 22546 Michigan Avenue, Dearborn, Michigan 313-561-1500. Private family identification has taken place already.
