Obituary

William (Bill) Lewis Behm, Jr., born on April 6, 1922 in Pittsburgh, PA to William L. Sr. and Bessie Marie Behm. Despite being born with a club foot and unsuccessful surgery, Bill managed to play basketball during his junior and high school years in his hometown of Wilkinsurg, PA. Upon graduationin 1940, he enrolled at Wake Forest College in the town of Wake Forest, NC where he became student manager of the freshman basketball team and assistant manager of the varsity team the following year. He was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and the Demon Deacon Club. While at Wake Forest he was befriended by Douglas Clyde (Peahead) Walker who was coach of the football team and a scout for the New York Yankees. This friendship ultimately led to Bill becoming a trainer for various minor league baseball teams. Peahead asked Bill to help out with the football team and although he graduated in 1943 and was employed by the American Tobacco Co., he would return every weekend to Wake Forest. In 1946 Wake Forest and South Carolina played in the first Gator Bowl in Florida. During that time he was the student manager of the team. Throughout his time as trainer at Wake Forest he was tagged with the nickname of "Daddy Behm". He left American Tobacco Co. after 9 months when Peahead asked him to return to Wake Forest to work with the football team for $50 a month, room and board. Once the football season ended, he would pick up jobs as trainer in a minor league hockey and baseball teams. Peahead was approached by someone in the Yankees franchise and asked if he could recommend someone to be a trainer in the Yankees minor league franchise and Bill was on his way starting his career in minor baseball leagues spending time in Denver, CO, Knoxville, TN, and Montgomery, AL. While in Denver he was trainer for the Denver Falcons hockey team. He spent a total of 20 years in the minors and was not only the trainer but traveling secretary and equipment manager. He saw many of his minor league players excel and were sent up to the major leagues. In 1966 he finally made it to the baseball major league as trainer for the Detroit Tigers when Jack Homel had to leave to care for his wife who was ill. Eventually, Bill (Beemer) was reunited with not only many of his league teammates but one of his managers - Ralph (Major) Houk when Houk signed on as manager for the Detroit Tigers. Bill is the only Tiger trainer to have the distinction of being in two World Series(1968 St Louis Cardinals and 1984 San Diego) and two All-Star Games (1969 Washington D.C. and the only All-Star Game played outside the United States, 1982 Montreal, Quebec). On September 14,1968 he married his wife Donna, who also worked for the Tigers. In April, 1970 they became proud parents of a beautiful baby girl, Annemarie Elizabeth.
